With a sigh, I made my way up the stairs and to the front door, knocking gently but loud enough for someone to hear. Thirty seconds past before the door opened and revealed Marquita's mother, Marquisha, "Katherine, what are you doing here?" She questioned with a smile.
Taking a deep breath, I looked her straight in the eyes, "We need to talk."
"About what, sweetie?"
"About George being Marquita's father." I stated firmly. The smile that once covered her lips was now replaced with a look of shock, horror and regret.
"Wha - how - come in." She says, stepping aside to let me in.
With a short nod, I stepped inside and found my way towards the dining area, "How?" She questioned as I took a seat at the table.
I looked up and met her gaze, "They are more alike than you realize, Mrs. Nials." I said.
She sighed heavily and sat back in her chair, "I never thought this day would come."
Kimberly shook her head, "No, you HOPED this day would never come. Why would you keep this from them? Why would you tell your daughter that her father ddin't want her? George is a good man who's always wanted children. Why would you do this to them?"
"I didn't want him to think he HAD to stay, that he had an abligation to me just because I was carrying his child. It was better for Marquita to think that her father didn't want her than for her to know he knew nothing of her." Kelly says while gazing at Kimbery.
Shaking her head, Kimberly quickly got to her feet, glaring down at the woman she considered a mother to her, "You and I both know that that is a load of bull. She would have wanted to know the only reason he was never around was because he knew nothing of her than to think he wanted nothing to do with her." She spat. It really hurt her to know that Mrs. Nials could do something like this and not come forward with the truth once Marquita was old enough to understand why she did what she did, why she choose the path she took.
"Are you going to tell them?" Kelly questioned, getting to her feet, a look of panic and fear flashing in her eyes.
Kimbery shook her head, "No, " Kelly visiably relaed before Kimberly gazed at her with determination, "You are. I will not be the one to cause them pain and I will not be the one they question why, you are. You're going to tell Marquita that George is her father." Kimberly says before the sound of something heavy hitting the floor sounded to her left.
"George is my...my father?" Marquita questioned, her eyes wide and mouth agape.
Kelly went to comfort her daughter but Marquita took a step back, "Sweetie, no -"
Kimberly glared at Kelly and took a step in her direction, "Don't you dare lie to her!" She snapped, "You've lied to her all her life, now it's time to tell her thr truth!" She spat.
Gazing at her friend, Marqita moved to stand before her mother and beside Kimberly, "Is it true? Is George really my father?" She choked out.
Her eyes meeting Kimberlies one last time, Kelly nodded, "Yes," Marquita gasped out, tears running down her cheeks, "George is your father." She finishes.
Marquita gazes at her mother in shock, "Oh My God." She gasped out, "Geroge is my father and you've lied to me about it my entire life!" She cried out.
"Sweetie - "
"Don't SWEETIE ME! All my life you made me believe that my father wanted nothing to do with me and it was all a lie! Georgie doesn't -" Her eyes widened, "He doesn't know about me, does he!?"
Her mother shook her head, "No, I never got around to telling him."
"You never got around to telling him? You've had TWENTY FIVE YEARS to tell him he had a daughter! You chose NOT to!" She screamed, "Georgie is an AMAZING man! He loves kids, he loves me and you made me think my father wanted nothing to do with me! I can't believe you!" She snapped before turning to Kimberly and hugging her, burying her face into her shirt. Kimberly rubbed her firneds back as she cried into her shirt. She hated that she was hurting and that she had to find out his way but on the other hand she was glad that she finally knew the truth. That her father was George and that he didn't not want her, he just didn't know she existed.
"Why didn't you tell him the moment you saw him again after so many years?" Kimbery voiced.
Kelly shrugged, "I don't know. He had just married your mother and everyone knows your mother and I didn't get along. I just - I didn't want her to think I wanted him back." SHe confessed
"That's not an excuse! To hell with what my mother would have thought. This is and was about your daughter! Nothing else should have mattered." Kimberly scolded.
Shaking her head, Marquita lifted her head and turned to her mother, "I am GOING to tell George that I am HIS daughter. And when I do, when he asks me why he never knew about me, I am going to send him here so that YOU can tell him you didn't get around to it and then after seeing him again after so long, you didn;t tell him because you wanted to avoid getting into it with Katie over wanting him back." She snapped before taking Kimberly's hand, "Lets go. I don't want to be here anymore." She says pulling her out the door and towards Kimmy's car.
"Why didn't you tell me that you were going to my mothers?" Marquita asked once they pulled out from in front of her mothers.
Kimberly sighed, "I didin't want to get your hopes up high about my suspitions of George being your father. I know how you feel about not ever knowing who he was. So, I wanted to get to the bottom of it before telling you anything." Kimberly explained.
Sighing, Marquita slumped back in her seat, "This is going to be one hell of a day." She groans as she thinks of a way to tell George that she is his biological daughter.
