Sydney, Australia

Lola was happy. Kind of. Her and Nate were best friends and it was her birthday. Her 13th birthday. She was finally a teenager. She'd been waiting her entire life to turn 13 and enter the exciting world that is being a teen but she quickly realized ( it only took her about an hour ) that being 13 doesn't really make you anything special. It just makes you one day older than you were yesterday. She still had to deal with an annoying brother, a nagging mum and an obnoxious cat for the mean time. And that made her furious. She had wasted the last 13 years looking forward to this day and it was nothing.

"Nothing!" She screamed through the white wash door at her best friend. "Nothing Nate. I don't feel anything. This was meant to be the best day of my life and I feel nothing whatsoever."

"Lola don't do this. Don't shut me out again. It's not good for you to stew." His voice calm and steady, used to Lola's outbursts. He only ever used her full name when he was extremely worried about her. He saw a change. She was becoming an angry teenage girl. She just didn't see it.

"You sound just like my mum."

"Well if you don't shut up I'll have to call her and you'll have two mums lecturing you out here."

"Fine" she huffed as she twisted the handle and stumbled out with black mascara running down her face and a birds nest on her head. She shoved past Nate and slunk down the stairs.

"Teenagers aye?" Lola's mum, Catherine, remarked as she walked past.

"Oh you don't know the half of it." He retorted.

Her family surrounded her as she blew out the candles on her blue and pink cake. She wished for a change. Some excitement. Drama. Anything to get out of this god awful rut she was in. Anything.

Her gift from Nate exceeded expectations as she tore open the sparkly paper.

"Mum wrapped it." He mumbled ashamedly.

"I love it." She giggled.

She tore open the box and there was a portable CD player and the new Girls Aloud cd. She was ecstatic to say the least.

"OMG NATE YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE I LOVE IT!" She squealed as she leapt onto him.

"You're welcome. Anything for my Princess Lola."

She ruffled his dark hair and gave him one last squeeze before bounding into the other room to show her mum her gift. Nate sat on the familiar couch, his long legs reaching across the paisley carpet. He sighed a breath of relief. This was gonna be a full on year.
