"Life......... is a tale Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, Signifying nothing." -Shakespeare, Macbeth
Life, to Adrien, was but a tale told by a drowsy mother to a small, impatient toddler. Its ending was the same, no matter whose perspective it came from. Every time the toddler begged for a different ending, the mother would walk away. She would walk away and take the book with her. That way, Adrien didn't know what to do next.
No matter how many times he begged for a different ending, he knew there was no way to avoid ending up where he was, on the floor and bleeding next to the broken pieces of his mother. Words meant nothing to his ears in that, split, moment. His hearing was gone. He found that day, that no matter how much he payed, he would not get his mother back. She would remain in the ground and he would remain on the surface. No matter how much he gave, he could never take that back.
The only person, if mercy meant anything to said person, who could give his mother back was God. In his darkest moments, he finds himself praying. In his brightest moments, he finds he is atheist. It's funny, he finds, that belief is only important to people when they're in need.
Time is selfish, and horribly greedy. Adrien finds, with each passing day, time takes bits and pieces of his mother and himself.
It took awhile for Adrien to notice his father had forgotten his mother's name. When he found that he did too, he found it impossible to breathe. When he found he forgot her voice, he found it impossible to walk. When he found he had forgotten her favorite color, he tripped. When he tripped, he found he had knocked over a photo of her. And, as it fell to the ground, he wondered if he would break with it.
Macbeth was wrong. Life meant everything to him, because life meant her. And as he looks at the broken pieces, he sees it.
Green.
