Chapter One

"We aren't safe here anymore. You know that. We have to be strong. Now. Kill him."

The rush of blood filled her up, quenching her most inner thirst. She couldn't fight it anymore, she just couldn't. And then she looked down, at the body. Terror. Death. No no no. This couldn't happen. Everything she'd been running from, everything that had destroyed her world, she was one of them now.

Caroline Forbes was a vampire.

"I can't afford to go without feeding much longer. Really, it's been what? Two weeks? That's not acceptable." Nathan Forbes was not known for his patience, whatever the situation may be.

"My dear brother, might I remind you that we do not exactly have the time to 'feed' while trying to escape our greatest enemy." Caroline, on the other hand, was much more patient. She loved her brother, but she knew that he couldn't last long without...blood. Caroline shuddered just thinking the word. Wherever she went, whomever she befriended, one fact always remained, she was a bloodthirsty creature. Just like her. Just like the woman who had destroyed her and Nathan's lives forever that night 100 years ago.

"Caroline! Caroline she's coming!" Nathan looked more panicked than she had ever seen him. Caroline shot to her feet. She had known for weeks now that this day would come. Ever since the day that their always peaceful village had been invaded by them. She remembered the panic, as the fiercest of all of the creatures had rode in on his black stallion, menacingly staring down at her brother. She remembered him approaching Nathan, his hand shooting out for his neck. She remembered the hiss of "where is she." and she remembered her brothers terrified face as he told the man the secret that he had been hiding for months. But most of all, Caroline remembered the moment when the man turned around, and seemed to look straight at her. She would never forget his face. The face of Niklaus Mikaelson.

Now, in this dark moonlit night she was coming to destroy them.

"Nathan" she said in an even voice "get mama and papa, and lock them in the shed. They should be safe there." Nathan's eyes were filled with fear. "And what...what about us?"

"That I cannot say."

Caroline sat in the room, preparing for the worst. She could hear her brothers shallow breathing next to her, sense the fear that wrapped around him. She knew that they would die tonight. Her only wish was to keep her parents alive. She hugged her brother, waiting.

And then, all at once, it happened. The scream ripped open the silent night, tearing through the fragile state of Caroline's world. Caroline didn't even think. She ran for the shed, faster than she ever had before, praying that it wasn't to late. She burst into the tiny building, and croaked out a scream.

Blood. So much blood. And her parents, lying face down in pools of red. Caroline sank to her knees. The world spun. A low chuckle came from behind her. Caroline didn't have to turn around to know who it was.

"Did you miss me?" said a syrupy feminine voice. She knew what would happen next.

Crack. And all at once, you're dead.

"Look, Care, I know this whole thing is hard for you, and you must understand, I want to help, but in order to do that, we both need food." Nathan persisted. He liked to annoy his sister at times, and he knew full well how to do it.

"Nathan. Please. I told you, you'll get it soon. We aren't far from our destination. Soon you can have all the blood you want." Caroline, through her quick wit, and obvious charm, had found her brother and her a place to live. Perhaps it wasn't ideal, but it was a start. Besides, she had worked servant jobs before, and they were pretty easy.

As long as no one found out your dirty little secret.

"Wake up. Care, wake up please." A choked voice rang out. Caroline opened her eyes, and it all came flooding back. "Nate...." she whispered, trying not to sob "what happened to me?"

"She...she came...and mama and papa..they..." Nathan held back a sob "Care, there's no easy way of saying this but....we're dead." Caroline sat up and stared at her brother. She could remember a loud crack, hands on her neck, and then...blackness. But she couldn't possibly be here then. She couldn't possibly have died. Unless..."Nate. If you're right. If I'm dead...if your dead, then that means we shouldn't....we should be with... with mama and papa. Not..." Caroline looked around "...in the middle of the woods."

"Care I...I couldn't help it. I just had to save you and I thought that she would kill us and I just...I didn't want to die. I never thought she would get to mama and papa. I just wanted to keep you safe" Nathan blabbered through tears.

"Nate. What did you do." Caroline's voice was like ice. She could already sense what her brother was going to say, yet she hoped that somehow it wouldn't be true.

"I...I put..I put blood in our food. Vampire blood. I thought that...that if we died.." Caroline's mind whirred.

"You mean we're vampires." She whispered.

"I am." Nate said sheepishly "You still have a choice."

"What-" Caroline was about to ask, when she noticed the body. A man, barely breathing, with two perfect puncture marks in the side of his neck. She gasped. "You wouldn't." She turned to Nathan with a horrified expression.

"I'm so sorry" he said helplessly "but I didn't want to die."

Caroline tried to get up, tried to run, but she felt dizzy, and there was a horrible burning in her throat. The world seemed to be moving at an unbearably fast pace, and her head throbbed. She let out a small, anguished cry, burying her head in her hands. "I know how it feels." Her brother, no- the creature that had been her brother, said. "Just drink. It makes it better."

"No!" Caroline sobbed. She knew that if she didn't have the blood, she would die, but at this point, it seemed like the best option. Could she really walk this Earth as a vampire, the very thing that had ruined her peaceful life?

"Care, I can't live without you! You're my sister please, please just drink!"

Looking into Nathan's desperate eyes, Caroline knew she didn't have a choice. With trembling hands, she reached for the mans limp body, and pressed her mouth to his neck. She felt the sharp points of the fangs, of her fangs, piercing the innocent's throat. Tears rolled down her cheeks as she felt the first drops of blood seep into her mouth.

"Care, I know it's hard." Nathan said, voice filled with pain. "But this is our only chance. We aren't safe here anymore.

And Katherine Pierce had killed her.
