Caroline was running through a dark forest, and she knew that something was following her. Something terrible. She could feel it creeping up, surrounding her, about to pounce. But then, the light of a cottage flickered in the wood. Caroline ran up to the door, and knocked frantically. It opened with a creak, light spilling out.
And then she woke up. Eyes flickering open, Caroline sat up. Groggily, she looked around the room. She had expected to see a simple servants room filled with other girls, but instead she saw..the library? For a second she couldn't recall last nights events, but then it all came rushing back. Caroline just wanted to lay down and go straight back to sleep.
The large grandfather clock in the corner of the room told her it was 9:30 in the morning. She tried to wrack her brain for details on when work started, but she couldn't quite grasp a thought. Lately, she'd been having this same dream, over and over, and it always ended, right before she could enter that little cottage. "Damn it all!" She said aloud. With a groan, she got up, and tried to walk as quietly as possible out of the library. It seemed as though she would be let go on only her second day of work.

When Caroline arrived at the kitchen, all the servants were bustling about, focused on their work, everything looked normal. Maybe I can slip in unnoticed, she thought. As she tried to grab an apron, she knocked over a pot, and of course, everyone in the room stared at her. Not again. "hello." She said. "I was just..I was.."
"With the lady Rebekah?" Chimed a timid voice. Pearl.
"Yes! Yes of course." Caroline smiled at the girl, she was glad to see some people around here were actually nice. A few of the cooks looked skeptical, but they wouldn't question it. "Well, now, why are you all standing around, I believe we have a ball to get ready for!" A few people clapped, and perpetration began.

5:00. Caroline had made two pies, a bourbon glazed pork roast, some sort of miracle casserole, and the ball was going to start in an hour.
"Um, Caroline?" said Pearl, who'd been her helper throughout the day. "If I remember correctly, you are actually supposed to see her ladyship in her quarters, right about now." Oh, trust me, I know, Caroline thought. She had only been thinking about it for the past eight hours.
"Indeed I do. I'm sure I mustn't keep her waiting." She said, managing to keep a steady tone. "Finish the casserole, will you Pearl? Hopefully I'll come back alive." Caroline couldn't help but laugh at the look of horror on the girls face. "Don't worry, I'll be back in time for the ball, it will all be fine. Oh, and if you see my brother, don't tell him where I am." Nathan was working waiter duty, and Caroline would have to talk to him about all this later. She had larger fish to fry. "Thank you!" She said, rushing out of the room before Pearl could respond.

Caroline stared at the slip of paper in her hand. Pearl had given her directions to Lady Rebekah's room, but it proved to be very easy to get lost in a place like this. Let's see, go left at the art gallery, then right when you reach the east conservatory. (NOT THE NORTH CONSERVATORY, it's very easy to get them confused). "Ugh." Caroline said. She genuinely did not want to make Rebekah mad, but by this time she had been to the Northern conservatory twice, and there was no sign of an art gallery. Places like this needed to come with built in maps.
"Lost?" said a male voice behind her. Although it was unfamiliar, it sent chills down her spine. Without turning around, she said, in what she thought was a brave voice. "Yes, actually. I'm looking for Lady Rebekah's room."
The mystery man chuckled. "Ah yes, my sister is very reclusive."
Oh no, not another one. Two Mikaelsons in a matter of days? this job really was a bad idea. "I see you aren't going to turn around, but I'll still introduce myself." The man walked towards her, until she felt his breath, or lack there of, against her neck."My name is Kol, I am devilishly handsome, and I would love to see more of you soon. Her room is just around the corner, by the way." At this point, Caroline turned around, but Kol was already gone. She hadn't even seen his face, and she knew she hated him. Right around the corner, this whole time. Damn it.

Caroline knocked twice before the door was opened by a talk, serious maidservant. "You must be Caroline." She said. "You are late."
"Well I-"
"Come this way. Lady Rebekah would like to chat with you." What a pleasant woman, thought Caroline, with an eye roll.
Rebekah stood in the middle of a room, surrounded my mirrors and tailors. "I told you, this dress must be perfect. For goodness sake, pick up the pace before I rip your throat out!"
"M'lady, a Caroline Donovan to see you." said the maidservant. She hastened out of the room, but not before giving Caroline a look that seemed to say. "Good luck. Trust me, you will need it"
Rebekah snapped her fingers, and the tailors all retreated to a corner of the room. "Why hello there, girl" said Rebekah. She was silent for awhile, admiring her reflection in the many glistening mirrors. A thousand different Rebekah's stared at Caroline. "Do you like it?" She asked.
"Excuse me, m'lady?"
"My dress" Rebekah said, in exasperation. "Do you like it?"
"Well, it's quite gorgeous indeed, m'lady." The dress was a deep red, with gold lace trimmings on the sleeves and neckline. It shimmered, tiny sparkling beads accenting the red beautifully.
"Yes it is, isn't it. But I will only wear it once. That's the shame in beautiful things, they can never last." There was a glint in the vampires eye as she said "You are quite beautiful." Suddenly, Rebekah was next to Caroline, right up by her neck. "You should be careful whom you defy, child, or trust me, you will end up like just another old dress, gathering dust in an empty wardrobe."
"I appreciate the advice, m'lady, but If thats all you called me here for, I should be getting back to the kitchen."
"Not so fast." Rebekah said, as Caroline started to walk away. "I would not suggest you come to the ball tonight. Much is happening in this household, and if you value your life-" she stopped for a moment, deep in thought. Then a tiny smile crept onto her face. This girl was not her friend, she would warn her of nothing. "It will be an interesting night." She said, snapping her fingers. The tailors flocked to her, and Caroline ran through the woods, away from the evil presence, as fast as her legs could take her.

Idek man. It's awesome how many people have actually read this story thing, I don't really know what I'm doing but it's kind of fun. I wrote this chapter kind if hastily, so it's a little below standards. I seriously will update more though, even if it takes like 6 months...(ALTHOUGH I REALLY HOPE IT DOESNT SRSLY) anyway hope you enjoy:)
