Heyy! So this is it, my first supernatural story. I’m new to writing stories so tell me how izit kayy??
I run down the wooden stairs with a hand on the metal railing. The wrinkled shirt that I wore to bed went down to just above my knees and I had my morning hair in a messy bun.
“Morning, birthday girl” a kind voice greeted me and I turned with smile to face a red haired June, our housekeeper, middle-aged woman with a heart of gold.
“Your mum’s waiting for you” Oh, so mum’s back from her business trip then. Surprise must have showed in my face because June gave me a kind but sympathetic smile then.
Mum sat at her office, surrounded a neat pile of important documents and her electronics. She looked tired. Eyes focused intently on her desktop, she had her hair up in a neat chignon as usual. “Heyy mum. How was your trip?? I missed..” I wasn’t allowed to finish as she cut me off distractedly. “Good. It was good, thank you, Ruby. Your dress for the party got delivered in the morning. I had June to put it in your room for you. The guests will all arrive by 8pm as planned. I expect you to make an entrance by half past 8 sharp. You will not be late.”
“Yes,mum.”
“Your dad and I will meet you there after our meeting this evening. A car will be waiting to pick you up later. These are very important people to me and your dad, Ruby Alice. I’m sure you know that. Don’t do anything foolish. Mingle around nicely. I will not have you make any scene tonight.”
“Of course, mum. I..” but I could see she was done speaking to me. Her full attention back to her work again. Shuffling back the way I came in, I couldn’t help but notice how despite all the talk of my birthday party tonight, she hadn’t actually wish me. Sigh.

Taking a walk in the park has become a favourite part of my daily routine. The brisk walk exercising my muscles, sending the blood in my veins to rush at a healthy pace. The beautifully landscaped park with trees of varying shades green and some with orange or reddish foliage feeds my mind . I don’t need my music player what with the many early-rising birds perched on thick trunks tweeting in their sing-song voices creating nature’s music. The clean crispy morning air with the faint scent of wet earth never fails to lift my mood. The invigorating feel of the sun awaking my sleepy nerves so addictive, it leaves my head in a fuddle every time.
Taking my sweet time walking around the huge park enjoying the rich nature that many take for granted, but sometimes I let myself wander too far, into the forest at the far end of the park. The forest filled with big old magnificent looking trees and occasional sighting of a brown deer or other furry animals like little fox or scuttering beavers. Sometimes I come here to bird watch as the somewhat silent setting of the woods attract many beautifully feathered birds to find a home amongst the trees. The sight of them in natural habitat rather than in a cage is far more majestic.
Walking through huge trunked trees that housed many of the forest animals, giving shade and shelter, I walked to the spot that never failed to take my breath away every time. Standing under the shade of an ancient oak tree, I looked up to see golden rays of sun peeking through the lively evergreen foliage. After a moment of letting the mesmerizing sight swallow me up, something glistening on the ground caught my eye, it glinted in the sun, a feather. I picked it up curious for a closer look. Fallen out of a grey winged bird, a long feather that ran from the tip of my fingers half way to the crook of arm, it’s hair so soft and fine, unruffled that the sunlight reflected off it.

“Your dad’s PA called, Ruby Alice. Your parents unfortunately had to attend a last minute meeting and they wouldn’t be able to be back for lunch.” Disappointment washed through me at June’s announcement.
