“Mom! Dad! I’m home!” I yelled as I slammed the door open.
“Well now the neighborhood knows.” I heard a grumble from the living room. I walked through to reach the kitchen.
“Hello annoying, brainy, over-bearing sister of mine,” I said with a thrust of my arms. Erika rolled her eyes and turned back to her computer. I entered the kitchen, grabbed a soda out of the fridge, and threw my backpack on the counter. “Where’s Mom?”
“Downstairs in the café.” Ah, yes. My mother ran the most popular breakfast place in town. I would probably spend a good part of summer working there.
“Dad?”
“Where he always is.” We were both silent. My dad was an FBI agent, and he…wasn’t home a lot. Don’t get me wrong; I know he’s a hero. Some days I just miss him. But I shook it off.
“What are you doing on the computer? School’s over.”
“Well I have to go to high school next year, and I’m trying to clock in service hours so I can make senior year easier.”
“You’re a nerd, you know that?”
“I prefer the term ‘smarter than you’.”
I stuck out my tongue and jogged up the stairs to my room. I lay on the floor and stared at the ceiling. Buzz. I whipped out my phone. It was Ashley.
Hey Zach, wats up? I sighed. Pretty sure I was in the friendzone and she didn’t even know she was doing it. Oh well. Best guy friend was better than being ignored. I texted back:
Nm. Hbu?
Hanging in my room. hru? I hesitated before I typed.
I’m good. Then again, I had just knocked the power out of a community pool and blown a hole in a field. Something I should think about….
