The Steelers are a professional NFL team. The Steelers were founded on July 8th, 1933, by Arthur J. Rooney. Arthur Rooney was born in 1901. Arthur was the oldest child out of nine. Arthur was a great athlete, and signed a contract with the Boston Red Sox. But an arm injury ended his baseball career. The Steelers original name was the Pittsburgh Pirates, named after Arthur's favorite baseball team. Rooney got the money to start the franchise by betting on horse racing. The Pirate's first uniforms were black and gold stripes. The first coach of the Pittsburgh Pirates was Walt Kiesling. The Pirate's first game was a blowout 23-2 loss against the New York Giants. The team's first points came off a safety when center John Oehler blocked a punt. The Pirates hired a new coach named Bert Bell. That season the Pirates went 1 and 9, beating the Eagles in the last game of the season. The Pirates uniforms were also bad. Arthur Rooney soon changed them. But that did not change anything. They went on another losing season. Arthur Rooney fired Bert Bell and brought back Walt Kiesling. He made an amazing turn around and brought them a 7 and 4 record.
