In 1957, Rooney hired new coach Ray Parker. He previously coached the Detroit Lions and had won three divisional titles. Parker started building the offense around QB Earl Morrall and WR Jack McClairen. The bruising combination brought the Steelers to a 6-6 record in 1957. The next season, Parker made a trade to obtain Bobby Layne, who had quarterbacked Parker's former team the Lions. Layne was a star. He played hard on Sunday and partied the rest of the week. He also said " I never lost a game, I just ran out of time." Parker also made a trade with the 49ers, getting halfback John Henry Johnson, who bruised defenses with his speed and strength. Parkers defense was led by Gene "Big Daddy" Lipscomb, was a one man crew. Parker had a record of .500 or better in eight years. In Parker's last season, the Steelers posted a 9-5 record.
