Don't look back.
Run faster.
I panted, quickening my pace as I ran away.
Not again, I thought for sure I was safe this time!
But I'm never safe. The last time the word safe applied to me I was five.
I could hear branches snapping behind me and a thundering roar.
I looked behind me.
There, right behind me was a large monster, with one ugly as hell red eye smack dab in the middle of its forehead, chasing me. As I looked back I accidentally tripped over a branch of a twisted oak tree and ended up rolling down the steep hill. I herd a sickening crack and felt a sharp pain in my ribs as I crashed into a rather heavy rock.
Once I stopped rolling I tried to get back in my feet. I could feel a sharp pain in my ankle but I managed to walk a few steps forward despite it.
I heard a roar at the top of the hill and I whimpered the damn thing was still after me. I stumbled through the trees clinging to consciousness. I grabbed a tree branch to steady myself as I grabbed the knife out of my boot. It wasn't ideal, I'd have preferred something with a little more reach, but it would have to do I looked behind me to see if the one-eyed-ugly-as-hell-monster-thingie was still chasing me.
I saw nothing past the dense trees blocking my vision, but just because I couldn't see it doesn't mean its not there. One of the first things I learned while I was on my own was you can't trust your eyes.
I closed my eyes and listened. I didn't hear any foot steps. I didn't hear any breathing other than my own ragged panting. What I did hear was the sound of running water. I immediately took off toward the sound. If there was water I could clean my cuts and hopefully follow it to safety.
My mother always told me, " The water will guide you in times of need my little bird. Follow it and you will be safe."
My mother had always loved the sun and anything that was summer like and that included water. She said she loved my eyes because they were the exact shade of green that the ocean was. I must have gotten them from my father because both my mother and brother had beautiful midnight blue eyes. And while we all shared the same ebony locks theirs were curly and thin while mine is thick and wavy.
I shook the thoughts of my mother and brother away and followed the sound of water. As I was stumbling toward it I leaned against a small tree for support. The tree gave out beneath my weight and I was sent tumbling down yet another hill though a considerably less rocky one thankfully. Once I came to a stop I grunted feeling the pain in my ribs and ankle worsen. Just as I let out a groan I heard a voice speak.
"What the Hades?"
I heard foot steps coming towards me. I immediately curled into a ball and tried to block out the pain as I waited for the darkness to settle over me.
I prayed to whatever higher power that watched over me that I wouldn't die, before the darkness took me.
