Harder Than I Thought

"GET OUT OF MY ROOM!!!" Missy screams.

"I know you have my headphones so i'm not leaving until I get them back." Jake says sternly.

I rubbed my temples while sitting on the couch, feeling a major headache come on. Whatever I said good about  these kids I take back. It's been two weeks and and all they have done is fight. I know they're not bad kids... but they just can't get along. They are almost completely opposite.

Jake is the kind of kid that likes to keep to himself. When he's not fighting with Missy, he shuts himself in his room and works on his School stuff. Pretty rare for kids theses days. As for Missy. She acts like a normal teenager. Boyfriends, slefies, boatloads of make up. That kind of stuff.

" You guys stop fighting, you're going to miss the bus if you take any longer." I call out

There was a moment of silence, then I hear footsteps come down the stairs. "Uh Max," Jake said awkwardly, "It's already 7:50...."

I look at my watch and sigh. " If you guys hadn't been fighting in the first place we wouldn't have lost track of time!" I yell.

They both stood there looking around the room not wanting to make eye contact. "Whatever, I have to go to the store anyways. Get in the car." I say.

They both grab their bags and make there way out the door. I stand up and grab the car keys. These kids are driving me crazy. I'm only twenty one and i've got gray hairs. Hopefully the day won't get much worse.

Just then the front door opens and Laura walks in. Great.

"Hi Maxie.." she says in a soft voice. "Sorry baby I have to go, the kids missed the bus. I'll call you later though."

Laura frowned at me then put her hands on her hips. I could tell she was about to blow so I took a step back. Laura sometimes could get really feisty. I already knew this wouldn't end well.

"You never do anything with me anymore! All you care about is those stupid kids and fame!"

The fear I had suddenly turned to anger. How could she say something like that? I did care about her! I've just been stressed and busy with the kids. "Well maybe if you'd stop being so demanding i'd actually like to spend time with you!"

She looked at me in a hurt way then smirked."You know what Max? I don't need you! I have plenty of guys just waiting for me to dump your sorry ass!"

I looked her straight in the eye and whispered," Same here..."

She let out a loud huff then stomped out the door slamming it behind her. I sighed slightly then put my head in my hands. A few tears escaped but I immediately wiped them away. I should have spent more time with her. Now she's gone. And i'm alone.

I shook my head then walked out the door. Jake and Missy were already in the car and surprisingly quiet when I got there. I started the ignition and pulled out of the car port, heading straight to Dawson Middle School.

"You guys sure are quiet." I say glancing in the mirror.

"We heard what happened." Missy said softly.

"We were coming back to get  you and..." Jake trailed off, "We're sorry we messed things up for you."

I sighed quietly, "It' not your fault you guys. The things that were said were out of anger. I have to take care of you either way, no matter what she says to me."

"I know." Missy said, "but we're still sorry."

I smiled slightly, "It's alright, i'll make it through this."
