"I made a new friend today."

Elise's legs swung back and forth under her chair as she chased some stray peas around her plate with her fork. They rolled quite nicely... could somebody play a game of marbles with these? No, too small, you could barely flick one without flattening it between your fingers. Your hands would have to be smaller, and so you would have to be smaller as well. Were there smaller people off in some corner of the world -- tiny people that lived in little nooks and crannies and used peas as marbles...?

"Elise, stop playing with your food, you're going to make a mess."

She realized she'd been squashing one such pea against the plate, and quickly ate it before turning to her mother behind her.

"He was nice. We watched the sky together."

She only got a vague half-polish of a plate with a dishtowel as a reply.

"That's nice, dear..."

Any other day she would've been cross at being ignored, kicked the table, recieved a scolding, perhaps, but the events of the day still left her smiling as she slowly toyed with the peas on her plate some more.

"Yeah.  It is..."
