That was the summer of 1963...when everybody called me ""Baby"" and it didn't occur to me to mind. That was before President Kennedy was shot...before the Beatles came...when I couldn't wait to join the Peace Corps... and I thought I'd never find a guy as great as my dad.
That was the summer we went to Kellerman's.We pulled into the parking lot of the Kellerman's, a summer resort we were staying at for the summer. There were people everywhere. They all looked happy and like they were enjoying their stay.
We got out of the car and looked around, waiting for the boys to come grab our bags."Oh, my God. Look at that! Mom I told you I should have brought the coral shoes. You said I was taking to much." My older sister complained.
"Well, sweetheart, you brought ten pairs." My mother said, still in the car.
My sister replied pouting, "But the coral shoes matched that dress."
"This is not a tragedy. A tragedy is three men trapped in a mine, or police dogs used in Birmingham." My dad said.
I spoke up, "Monks burning themselves in protest." I smiled.
"But out, baby." My sister said, clearly annoyed that she didn't get to bring her coral heels.
A rather big guy in the field yelled through his speaker, "Okay, we got horseshoes on the south lawn in 15 minutes! We've got splish-splash the water class down by the lake. We have the still life art class. We've got volleyball and croquet. As for you older folks, we got sacks!" He said laughing afterwards.
I laughed to.A bald guy in a suit came up yelling "doc!". He was talking to father.
"Max!" My dad said back.
The bald man, Max, held out his hand to shake my fathers'.
"Doc, after all these years I finally got you up on my mountain."
My dad laughed, "So, how's the blood pressure, Max?"
Max turns to me and Lisa, "I want you girls to know...if it weren't for this man, I'd be standing here dead. Billy, get the bags." He says to the man, who looks around my age, next to him. "Right away, Doc." My dad hands Billy the keys.
Max continues," I kept the best cabin for you and your beautiful girls."
I walk over to Billy as he is opening up the trunk of our car. I start grabbing some of the bags as well.
"Hey hey, thanks a lot. You want a job here?" He asks. I just smile.
I hear Max say that there is a merengue class in a few minutes. "The greatest teacher. Used to be a Rockette."
"It's his first vacation in six years, Max. Take it easy." My mother says.
"Three weeks here, it will feel like a year." Max replies.
"One, two, three, four! Stomp those grapes and stomp some more." Said the dance teacher. "One, two, three, four! Listen to the music!"
I bumped into a few people. I can't even count how many times I said sorry."Move your caboose, and shake it loose!"
The dance instructor was a gorgeous girl. She had bright blond hair, and a nice tan. She had a red dress on that she was shaking back and fourth as she danced. Black heels that made a click noise when they hit the floor."One, two, three, four! Start the train!
Come on, men! Follow me into a round robin! Ladies, the inner circle!"
We were all laughing and having fun. Dancing isn't my best subject, so I didn't enjoy it as much.
"Oh, come on ladies! God wouldn't have given you maracas if he didn't want you to shake them!" She yelled again. She had us stop when she said and grab the 'man of our dreams'. I got stuck with a cute old lady.
