Hiphop in a way that mimicked the rhythmic cadence of soldiers marching. Hiphop music and culture formed during the 1970s when block parties became increasingly popular in new York city. Block parties incorporated DJs who played popular genres of music like funk and soul music. By 1979 hiphop music had become a mainstream genre. And spread across the world in the 1990s with controversial gangster rap.
