Tears slip down my face,

as I remember his embrace.

His bag dug into my side

when he said his final goodbye.

With the promise he'd be back

he took a flight for Iraq.

For five months I'd be waiting,

wondering when he'd be coming.

Alas a stone-faced soldier

one day gave me a letter.

The promise he did keep,

in a coffin for eternal sleep.
