“Sertain. Sertain! Wake up you lousy excuse of a person! Today’s your first day in training.”

“Fine, Leron. Give me a few seconds to get ready. I’ll be downstairs in a few minutes.”

Florescent green light fills the room as the young man wakes up. His messy brown hair falls in front of his topaz eyes as he gets out of bed. He gets dressed in his usual brown shirt and pants. He runs outside, grabbing both his leather boots and black coat, to go. Sertain is greeted by Leron to see if he is ready for today’s special training.

“Finally ready are we?” says Leron.

“I didn’t have as much time since the training event starts early.” Sertain replies as he ruffles his hair.

“You’re right laddy. 18 years old, and still in usual habits. No time like the present since you’ve only ten minutes to get to the hall. If I have the time right.”

“What! Why didn’t you wake me up sooner?”

“I thought they’d give you a break on the first day”

“Come on, Leron. Hope you’re fast.” Sertain exclaims as he bolts down the street.

Rushing through Merne, they race to the the training hall. The town is packed with an excited crowd awaiting the morning’s training to observe the candidates’ skill in training. Sertain cuts a few corners and finally makes it there when the doors almost close. “Hold the door open” exclaims Sertain as he jumps through the doors. ‘Just in the nick of time. Now lets get this over with’ Sertain thinks. The inside of the training hall is filled with rows of people that are unbearably awaiting the action. Leron bumps into Sertain to give him his iron sword. “Make good use of it” he says. Sertain then turns back to see a man who resembled a walking corpse with pale complexion and black hair. He walks to the podium to address the crowd.

“Ladies and gentlemen, I am Sherdon and it is with great pride that I give to you, the people Merne, the warriors in training”he says “They will face three trails: magic, skill and battle. Whoever survives this will join the ranks of the Ferlin army! Luck be with you and let the trials begin!”

Cheers burst from the crowd as the inside of the hall starts to transform. A mountain, targets and caves form where the arena was minutes ago. A part of the ground gives way to reveal a scroll and pen. Another portion of the ground opens up a weapon rack to place their unnecessary items. Sertain puts his sword on the wall as the other do the same. Then, Sertain and the other people approach carefully toward the scroll as words begin to form on it saying “Sign your name here to continue onwards” ‘Not to hard’ he thinks and signs his name. After waiting for the other to sign, Sertain wonders how in the world the mountain grew. “You will now all receive one scroll, each containing 5 magic spells which may aid you in reaching the summit. You may choose whether or not to use these if you wish. You will be allowed to keep during the trial if you wish to. Farewell to you all. Survivor on not” the scroll said. As it disappeared, a parchment of paper appeared in to everyone’s hand. ‘I will get to the top and nothing is going to stop me’ Sertain thought as he enters the cave.

Dark like an eternal nightmare coming to life. Shadows, ominously moving, fill the caves. Sertain and his other companions that came with him go deeper into the mountain for more ways to go to the top. A three fork in the mountain was a choice between life and death depending where the go. They take a break, exhausted from going higher in atmosphere than they are used to.

“What’re your names” Sertain asks.

“None of your business, shortstack.” the tall teen snaps.

“Call me all the names you want, I just want to know.”

“Enough arguing.”says the person next to me. “The name’s Herac. That guy’s name is Kobart, she is Marriana and the other girl is Irean. Just for you to know, Irean is sort of shy.“

“Okay. Well now that i know your names, let’s get going since we’ve taken a break. Come on.”

Venturing further into the mountain, they find three paths that could lead to life or death. They took their chances and headed for the first tunnel. Kobart stops suddenly as if he’s seen something dangerous. Everyone except Sertain was curious why. Sertain ventures forward and bumps into a massive heap of fur and spikes. Armed with dagger-like claws as it starts to move toward the unaware trainee. A smoky breath is taken and a stream of fire bursts out of it’s mouth. One word describes it, mutation. Running for his life as the beast comes closer, he tries to reach his group, unaware of the danger, as fear rises in him. He crashes into his group and the beast sees them as well.

“Thanks, shortstack. We’re gonna die.”Kobart

“Shut up. Do you want to live?”Sertain whispers.

“We can’t fight this... this thing.”

“Yes we can!” Sertain says as he pulls out the scroll.

The scroll glows with gold tinted words. The letters on the scroll quickly rearrange themselves in front of Sertain to form the first spell. Backed against the cave wall, Sertain steps forward and says with strength in his voice “Iretonda”. A blue flash of lightning strikes the beast with so much force, it is flung through a wall and into a chasm, sending the beast to its doom. They go forward and are amazed that Sertain could use magic in a life or death situation. Stairs mark going to the top and they are greeted with the crowd on the top of the mountain. Sherdon flies over to them and asks some questions. Sertain thinks there is more to Sherdon than he thinks. ‘Maybe he was watching us with magic as we traveled through the caverns.

“How did you get to the top of the mountain and who helped you?”he asks.

Sertain is pushed as Kobart answers “We used magic to defeat enemies and I lead them.”

“What spell did you use?”

“Ummmm....... It was a lightning spell” Kobart replies quietly.

“Can you give us a demonstration of it?” Sherdon asks with an innocent tone.

“Sure.” Kobart says eager to keep his ego intact.

Kobart stand in front of a target and tries to use the spell. “Iretonad, Irenotda, Itonre,” he says as he tries to cast the lightning Sertain used. Sertain stands up and pushes Kobart out of the way.”Iretonda” he casts and destroys the target with blue lightning. He walks away as the target burns in the raging fire he created.

“Well done. What’s your name?” Sherdon asks, still astonished at how much fire was created.

“My name is Sertain.” Sertain replies.

“ Your last name.” he asks

Sertain hesitates before he answers “Nightlen.” he replies

The crowd gasps at his last name . It was the name of the king that they had died 5 years ago before a new king took the throne and was still ruling right now. Everyone thought that it was a joke so they laughed at it. Not minding the crowd, he asks Sherdon to start the next trial of the game after one more group comes. At the same time, A group with Leron as the leader comes out of the cave. Sherdon then stands to the crowd to tell them about the next event.

“With commencing the next phase of the trials, I have to say that I never thought royalty would be in this event.” Sherdon says sarcastically. “On the other hand, the trial of battle will require everyone to take a weapon that you have brought or choose a weapon that we will bring shortly after we set the stage for your trial. Let the next trial begin! “

“Nice job surviving, Sertain.” Leron says.

“I’m not going to tell them anymore about myself and you because what they might say” Sertain says, with a sad demeanor on his face.

“Don’t let it get to you. You have a group and help them try to survive in the hardest part of the trials.”

“Ok. Le'ts do this and see what happens next.”
