Joaquin was a 19 year old boy living in a remote village of Spain and who got an opportunity to study in one of the best universities in Spain due to sheer hard work. He did not know that he was born HIV positive as his parents died early and lived with his grandparents who were poor and they did not want to disclose him about it.
While in college he met Christina a simple and honest and active student from a middle class family they both soon became good friends and used to accompany each other wherever they went.While they were studying in second year Joaquin became very ill and was admitted to thenearest hospital where after his checkup he came to know he was suffering from AIDS.
Christina was shocked to know this and immediately contacted his grandparents who came and later told everything to Christina that Joaquin was born HIV positive as his mother was injected infected blood when he was about to be born at the government hospital. Christina could not sleep and eat the coming weeks he would wake up at nights sweating thinking about Joaquin.
Later when the University Authorities came to know about it they expelled Joaquin from their University so that bad name would not be bought on their reputation. They told Christina not to go and meet her friend but instead prepare for the final examination. In school, other students started avoiding her also because of Joaquin’s situation.
Christina felt very bad, she went to the Office of Student Affairs and reported everything but didn't get any response. She told her parents about the situation but unfortunately her parents scolded and told Christina to concentrate on her studies otherwise she will be grounded.
Christina felt very bad and for the next 2 days she stayed in her room thinking what to do next, finally she made up her mind and went to the hospital to meet her friend before going to school. On reaching there she found out that Joaquin grandparents had taken him back to the village as he had only a few days to live.
She called up Joaquin’s grandparents to inquire about their grandson, they told her that Joaquin had been running a high fever since two days and would vomit blood frequently and by saying this they started crying and saying “First, his parents then him why us? we never did anything wrong with anyone! And still we are suffering from this. Why God let this happens to us.”
Christina comforted them and told them that Joaquin is very blessed that he have his grandparents that raised him well and let him experienced what the real world is. When she hung up the phone her eyes were moist with tears she remembered all the good times they spent together and what a fun loving person Joaquin was. She cannot concentrate in answering the questions on the examination thinking about her friend, so she made up her mind to go and visit Joaquin, the University authorities didn’t allow her to go out. Still Christina packed up her bags and left and headed Joaquin’s village knowing that strict action will be taken against her but she is ready to face any punishment.
On reaching Joaquin’s Village she inquired about the house and reached it where she saw his friend lying on the sofa. On seeing her friend tears rolled into her eyes, Christina went and gave Joaquin a tight hug, then she made his friend rest in her lap and started talking about all the funny things they did,Joaquin’s grandparents were sitting in a corner of the hut crying seeing their grandchild in such a state. After having dinner, Christina take care and made Joaquin sleep in her lap at the sofa. Joaquin’s grandparents were sitting in a corner of the hut crying seeing their grandchild in such a state. Around 2 AM in the morning Joaquin started breathing heavily and started coughing blood he told Christina to bring her ears near his mouth and last lines he muttered were “I knew you would come I was waiting for you all the time you truly are a friend that I would want God to be with me in eternal life.” and then he passed away in her friends lap.
The whole time around Christina remain still. As if everything is frozen Christina’s mind went blank as to what had happened to her best friend who happened to be cheerful, looking good, fine and happy a few week before.
She gave a tight hug to her best friend and whispered “Rest my dear friend thank you for the genuine friendship and for the memories we’ve shared I will never forget you! Till we meet again.”
Out of no where Joaquin’s Grandmother came and saw Christina hugging Joaquin while crying. She tapped Christina’s shoulder and said “ I knew this will happen but not this early”. Then she give a letter to Christina and read it.
Goodbye My Dear Christina,
I know I'm already dead by the time you receive this letter.
We’ve done a lot of things that we’ll never regret; The good ones or the bad ones, moments I’ll never forget. It’s hard for me to cheer up, because I am feeling blue; By accepting the fact that, my life’s never the same without you. You’ve been here with me, through my ups and my downs; You’ll be willing to walk on by the outskirts of all towns. Just to help me get through, my problems all along. Now that I’m already gone, I know how strong you are and you can get over it!
I’ll miss you! Thank you!
