5 years old

Almost accustomed to the Rules

you know you have to go there everyday.

So you wake up

when Mum tries to wake you up with a glass of cold Milk.

And just like how you know

that Thursday comes after Wednesday

you know for a fact that the milk is c o l d.

Cold because she was running late

like every other day.

You couldn't possibly despise it more,

despise the sunlight for piercing through your morning eyes,

and despise the crusts on your bread

that Mum forgot to remove, again.

So while you try your best to peel off the crusts

with your fragile fingers,

you ask her with a little bit of hope,"Where is Papa?"

"He went to work, honey.", she replies.

It is nothing you never heard before.

And because it is not something you have never heard before,

you just eat your bread and you tie your shoelace

And before you know it,

you are on that Yellow bus again.

And again,

they laugh at you

and again,

they point at you so

the memory of you tripping over your shoelace

TAUNTS you

till you feel your eyes start to b u r n

like that morning sun.

And right at that moment

when once again you almost hated TODAY

Laisha saves you

by calling out your Name.

And because she knows how much you love the wind,

the way it makes your curls fly behind you --

she lets you have the window seat.

So you settle down and you smoothen the pleats on your skirt

before you show her the work you have been doing

staying up past your bed time, last night.

She looks at those crayon figurines under the Tree

and the love you showed her through those colours --

reflected back at you through her heartwarming Smile

and you just knew

Today, you will get through.

Today, I do not need to protect you.
