The rest of the time, Gia and I ate and talked and danced to the loud music.
I was bring into an apple, when Gia hi per up from behind me and put her arm over my shoulders. "I can't wait to find out what color you get. You're so unpredictable."
"Huh. Thanks."
"I wasn't trying to insult you, or anything. I'm just curious. Would you think you'll get?"
"Ooh, maybe I'll get rainbow if I'm so unpredictable," I said, letting a little irritation seep into my voice.
"I told you, I wasn't trying to be mean. And besides, rainbow has only ever happened once. You only have a .1% chance of getting rainbow."
"I know, I was kidding."
Gia shook her head and smiled.
"I'm gonna go to the bathroom, I'll be back in a little bit," I said.
"Ok, see ya."
I walked into the crowd and went to the bathroom. When I was washing my hands, I looked into the mirror, turning my head left and right, picturing myself with rainbow hair. Maybe it really was possible.
No, I thought. Don't get your hopes up. You're not special. I turned off the sink and dried my hands off on my dress.
I left the bathroom, zoned out on the floor, lost in thought. I ran headfirst into something large and fell over. I looked up and saw Greson standing over me.
"Sorry," he said, holding out his hand. When I took it, he lifted me back onto my feet. He chuckled. "We have to stop meeting like this."
"No kidding," I said, and couldn't help but smile.
I saw Greson bite his lip. Was he nervous? If so, what about?
"Do you have a boyfriend?" He asked suddenly.
Raising an eyebrow, I said suspiciously, "No. I've never had one. Why?"
"Uh... reasons." He shook his head. "Hey, listen-" he stopped mid-sentence and looked at me. He drew in a breath, then, in one swift motion, took my head into his hand and bent down and kissed me tenderly. I blushed. Hard.
My eyes wide, he pulled away. He looked at me, and when he saw my face, his shoulders slumped. But before he could turn away, I put my arms around his neck and kissed him, and he kissed me back.
My eyes still closed and my lips still pressed against Greson's, I heard something shatter, and pulled away to see what it was.
I saw Gia, gaping, with her hand open in midair. Then I noticed the broken glass at her feet. She must have dropped her cup when she saw us kissing.
"I was... just gonna go... to the... bathroom... and then...." her hanging mouth formed a surprised smile.
I removed my arms from around Greson's large shoulders and we awkwardly scooted away from each other, both staring at the floor, blushing.
Gia pursed her lips. "My life is complete," she whispered. "April has a boyfriend. I can't believe it. I can't believe it!" She turned and walked away, still muttering things to herself.
I glanced at Greson, who was looking at me. I smiled, and he smiled back.
"Greson!" A voice called. I saw a boy with short blue hair waving him over.
"See you later," Greson said as he walked away.
Still in shock, I collapsed into my knees, eyes wide. Then I looked at the ceiling, closed my eyes, and smiled. I didn't care what people thought of me doing this, or what they thought about me loving Greson, or what they thought about anything. I was happy.
