"Look, I appreciate the, uh, kind offer.... but I think I will have to decline it. Thank you for your time."
I spoke the words I'd memorized by now to the young lady in front of me. Her enthusiastic smile disappeared, replaced by a frown, discontent filling her eyes.
"Oh. I see.... I'm sorry for taking up so much of your time, m'lord," she muttered before quickly walking off. I sighed, sinking down slowly into my father's throne. It definitely has been a long, unsuccessful week.
You see, I was born an only child into the royal family of the Iyoven Kingdom. I was named Quincy Mediean after my great grandfather, whom of which had been a supposedly fantastic king back in his day. My family thinks that I am of the right age to begin my search for a maiden fit to be my queen when I must rule, but... well, so far it's been going terribly. I haven't found a single maiden that catches my interest. And truth of the matter is, I've never been too fond of the girls in this kingdom. Maybe I never will be. What do I do then? No. That's not possible, I just haven't found the right one...
I sigh once more before dragging myself from the throne, one that someday will have to be mine. I follow the sound of a loud, boisterous, male voice to find my father speaking to one of the servants of the castle.
"Um, excuse me, Father," I say quietly. He stops his dialogue to face me.
"Ah! Quincy, my dear boy! Have you found a maiden fit to be queen?" he asks. He seems to have his hopes up high. Too bad I have to be the one to crush those hopes for now.
"Not... yet. I'm still searching. I was going to let you know that I was going to go outside to get some fresh air." He seems to think for a moment, but reluctantly he agrees to let me leave.
"Be home before dark, and be safe, there seems to be a storm on the way." I nod understandingly, only half listening to him, and make my way to the front entrance to our castle. It had been quite a long time since I had left the castle. I mean, I've never even been out alone, but I guess my parents trust me now that I'm older. I take a deep breath and open the doors revealing the outside world.
It was cloudy out, a dark grey overcast loomed above everyone. A cold breeze swept through the air, piercing through my dark blue coat and light blue scarf that my mother had knitted for me to match my light blue eyes placed perfectly in my light skinned, thin face, framed by my mop of curly brown hair that began to be rustled by the breeze. I shivered, wrapping my coat tighter around my small frame. I took yet another deep breath as I stepped out into the open, shutting the doors behind me before walking down the dirt path that led me to the rest of the kingdom ahead of me.
I wandered aimlessly through the streets, keeping, my head down in hopes that no one recognizes me. I begin to think once more about what I was going to do if I never found a maiden who I liked enough to ask to be my wife and the next queen of the Iyoven Kingdom.
'Maybe I'll just look for someone who seems more fit for a queen rather than a wife...' I think to myself. I continue to weigh the options in my head when suddenly someone runs into me, knocking both of us to the ground. I lay flat on my back, wondering what just happened, staring at the sky. I finally snap back into reality when I hear movement from behind me. I sit up and turn to face the sound to find myself face to face with a boy.
He seemed to be about my age with fair skin, his face dotted with freckles. He had shaggy, strawberry blonde hair and piercing green eyes with flecks of golden brown scattered amidst the green. He seemed pretty scrawny with his loose, white tee shirt and dark pants, now containing some holes around the knees from the fall.
"O-oh! S-so sorry! I didn't really see you there! My deepest apologies! Now I must be going if you don't mind," he said hurriedly. He stood up, ready to run off but I called out.
