Intro and beginning thoughts

The year is 1940 in Warsaw, Poland. It is a bad time to be a Jew, as fourteen year old Leaven Balick soon learns. She lives in the Ghettos, where Nazis threaten death at every move and people disappear on a whim. With her only possessions being a diary and an indigo scarf, she feels alone and isolated until she meets Derek Rolf, a boy her age who is the son and nephew of Nazi officials. Derek, who is largely shielded from the Jews around him, feels suddenly attracted to this girl with the strange star on her arm. As the months wear on, Leaven and Derek form a forbidden love, until one day the unthinkable happens: Leaven and her family are selected to work at a concentration camp.

First off, I want to give a big thank you to everyone who clicked on my little story! My writing is only just taking off, and even though I'm not perfect, I hope to inspire you all someday.

Next, I know how ambitious a task writing about the Holocaust can be. One can not truly grasp the horror of that time unless they have lived it. As spectators, we can only read and listen and try to understand the testimonies given by survivors, and get just a glimpse into their world. Which is a world that is almost unspeakable.

With that being said, this is my attempt. I am not a survivor, nor a descendant, but just a curious writer who is fascinated by the many stories we hear. It requires much detail, planning, and set in stone intentions to create a story such as this. So I must work with what I hear and learn. And, to take on this time in history in a slightly innocent way, I placed the point of view of two children. Two very different children, seeing the world in different ways, but still shielded somehow.

This decision, though making it both easier and incredibly harder in many ways, will hopefully work in my favor. In my journey with all of you readers, I hope to discover a side of the Holocaust many of you might not have known. I hope you enjoy my work, even though it's not great, and remember the tragedy that should never be repeated.
