Chapter 1 : Reina

I run wildly through the woods.  Tree after tree, soon everything becomes a blur.  A dark shadow looms behind me.  A desperate scream escapes my lips.  Whatever is chasing me is getting closer, gaining on me.  Suddenly the toe of my shoe hits a tree root and I go flying.  My palms are splayed in front of me.  Then I hit the ground, hard.  My head pounds as I get up and I spit out blood, but at the same time I'm excited.  I've never gotten this far before.  Whatever has been chasing me has slowed down.  The ground shakes, its growing nearer.  I will finally be able to figure out what has been chasing me, what creature has been terrorizing my dreams since as long as I can remember.  Today is the day.

“Reina, Reina!” a voice says.

“Reina, you are going to be late for school.”

Crap.  So much for ‘today is the day’.  The image is growing smaller and smaller.  I reach out to grab it, but nothing’s there.  I slowly open my eyes.  My mother is looms over me, a scowl on her face.

“Reina get up, you're going to be late for school.”  She turns to go, and when she reaches my door she pauses. “Oh and by the way, your not going anywhere this weekend until you clean your room.”

“No promises!” I cry after her.  I roll over, and drag myself out of bed.  Reaching over I  grab a battered old book off the floor.  It’s an old journal that I found at a used bookstore, buried under one of the numerous piles of books. I was actually quite shocked that no one had picked it up, it really is a gorgeous book.  It’s the color of rich wine, and has a gold leaf binding.  Scattered among the cover are gems, which are probably fake.  If you ask me, it seems like something out of a fairytale.  But my favorite part about it is this ruin on the cover.  I don’t know what it means, or if its just in a different language or something, but it's pretty cool.

I flip through the pages to a clean one, then pick up a nearby pencil on the floor and start to write, but nothing happens.  I glare at the pencil and its broken tip, the useless piece of junk.  Sharpening it would be to much work, so I chuck the pencil into the garbage can, and grab a pen instead.  After a few test marks it starts to work.

Had the dream again.  This time I tripped.  I would have seen it, but my mom woke me up.

Satisfied, I flip the cover shut.  I know a dream journal sounds lame, but I can’t help myself.

“Reina, you have ten minutes, then were leaving.” I’m suddenly awake, and bolt into action.  I grab a pair a jeans off my floor, some random shirt, my favorite sweater, and some essentials, and in two minutes I’m ready to go.  I glance at the mirror.  Red hair, freckles, and blue eyes.  Up or down?  Up.  With a couple of tries my hair is in pony tail.  I’m practically sprinting as I rush out to the kitchen.  I pull on my boots, throw together a lunch, and gather up last nights homework.

“Lets go, Reina!"

“Coming, coming, just let me grab a coat.”  Twenty minutes later, I’m in front of the school.  It looms in front of me, and I want to glare at it.  Though, that would be kinda pointless seeing that it doesn’t care. “Reina, get out of the car. I’m going to be late”.  An icy cold gust of wind hits me as soon as I hop out of the car, and I run-waddle to the building.  The warmth of the building is a sweet relief.  My shoes squeak as I try to ‘fast walk’ down the empty hallway.  I start to slow down as I get to my locker. Then come to a full halt.  Over my locker in sharpie the word LOSER is written.

You’ve got to be kidding me.  I’m already late.  I don’t even know how to get sharpie off my locker.  I let out an annoyed sigh and shove my stuff in my locker.
