1 The Dream

It was cold, so cold. The room she propped her self up in was dark and gloomy, it held the air of death. She could hear laughter further away but it was so dark and she was so cold. Her limbs felt like pure blocks of ice, unmoving.

How had it come to this? Who put her here? Why? So many questions rushed her, all panicked and pained. Was this how she died? She was suppose to go old and happy, that's what everyone says anyways. That's what is suppose to happen. Your born, you grow, you work, you have children, you retire, and then you die. This is what life and death is, not some dank whole where sadness was certainly born from.

Somewhere a door creaked open and light streamed into the darkness. She felt slow and weak but looked up into the light of the tunnel, it was so cliche. Yet she wanted to move forward, drag herself if she had to, she had to make it to that light. Then a figure stepped out just as she was starting to move. It was a mans body, a large man at that.

Even at the distance for some reason she could make out his features, could see the chisled face that spoke of pure masculine beauty. He had strong brows that were furrowed together in a pained look just above his deep sensuously dark eyes as he took in her broken form. She was certain he was horrified at what he saw, she probably would be as well. His straight nose led down to his full lips that were parted as if he wanted to call out to her, somehow she knew he wanted just that.

Yet before he could, she watched as another dark figure lurked behind him. She wanted to scream out, had to warn him. But just as she began to cry for him to move the figure stabbed something through his strong body. The beautiful mans eyes widened as he looked down at the intruding jagged object. He looked up at her one last time as he dropped to the floor in front of the shadow figure.

A piercing scream of denial tore out of her, her heart was breaking for the man bleeding on the ground. Just then a viscous smile came from the figure, its teeth white as pearls as it grinned from ear to ear. It began to shut out her only light stopping just as the last sliver of light was disappearing to speak to her. It's voice was nails on a chalk bored and scrapping glass all at the same time,  "Only the beginning my dear." He said leaving only a million more questions for her. Sobs wracked her body as she screamed again for it to stop. However before the light was completely gone she awoke.

It was her room, her bed, her mother that leaned wide eyed over her. "Eve! Eve!" He mothers voice was shaken as she cupped her daughters face.

"Mom?" Her voice cracked as she was suddenly aware of the wet tracks on her face and the way her body was sweat covered and sticky. "What's happening? I was..." she stopped herself, unwilling to tell her delicate mother the horror she went through.

"You were dreaming again my love, it was just a dream." The woman sat beside her and softly rubbed circles against her back.

"Night terrors." She stated only for her mothers ears. She had a deep sinking feeling they were something entirely different though, something twisted.

"Yes," her mothers cool fingers paused on her back. "Evelyn, I've been thinking..." she stopped talking though just at where her thought should have started.

"What mom?" She sat up now trying her best to stop her fingers from trembling as she laid her hand on her mothers arm as a sign to continue. She had to seem unaffected, just had to for both of them.

"I want to leave here, the doctors said maybe it's the environment. We could go north, go live with your cousins for a while. The air up there is so clean baby, it could help." Her mother was grasping thin air, Eve could feel it was a last step. Last step before the testing started again, before she'd stay endless nights at the hospital under study once again.

"What about your job?" She asked the woman who never seemed to leave her, though it was probably the best thing to for her mother. Like her father had when the never ending nights grew worse when she was younger.

"Oh there's always more jobs, I could work for the family business up there. Talk about job security?" She nudged Eve's shoulder with her elbow and give her a small smile.

"I..." before she could try to convince her mother otherwise she was interrupted.

"I think we should go, your not happy I see it everyday and every night. This place doesn't matter, it's just that, a place. I think family could help It's been me and you for so long... never mind I'm making an executive decision, I think we should go." Her mother gave her a stern look, however she knew it would crack given the slightest push. But maybe it was the best idea. She could get other opinions from different doctors if this newest idea didn't work out again.

"Ok, if your sure." Her mother immediately bounced off her bed. She was so excited, like a child opening a birthday gift. It was as if she'd been wanting this for awhile.

"Oh, I will go get boxes tomorrow, I'll have to ask around and find a good truck company, your just going to love Montana." Her mother rattled on for a while after that. It was still so early she couldn't, or really didn't want, to return to sleep.

Montana... home of the wooded cold, she couldn't wait. Her life in the city was what she was use to, the never ending noise and loud shouts of dismayed people. The sheer numbers compared to her mothers family's small town would be shocking in itself. However, seeing her mother bustle in that excited skip around there small flat made her keep her trap shut. Her mom deserved a second chance, time to spend with other people. To not get woken up ever night to be worried and stressed by her teenage daughters constant condition.

She would shut up and paste a smile on her face for her. She would be the perfect child, help with moving, be supportive. Whatever it took so that at least one of them could be happy. Who knows maybe her sleep patterns would finally come to a head.
