~Prologue~
MANDY
November 21st, 2017
Mandy and Travis, her boyfriend of three years, were taking a walk around their small town of Woodland. Woodland was a town that wasn't very well known, and you could easily drive through it if you weren't looking for it, yet that was part of why the whole town was extremely close, and also a huge gossip machine. Mandy and Travis having been a couple for so long were accustomed to how everyone associated them together as a single unit instead of two individual people. They were always together, however Mandy wasn't prepared for what Travis would now decide they should do.
"Mands, you know I love you, I just... I think that we need to take a break. It's almost senior year, and we have been together all of high school. I think we both need to experience life on our own, you know what I mean?" Travis confessed while holding Mandy's hand. Mandy's eyes widened and she leaned back on the support beam of Wishward Bridge. Travis wanted to break up? What had she done wrong to deserve this? She had heard rumors of Jessica Rivers, the meanest girl in school, flirting with Travis in physics class, but she hadn't even given it a second thought. She and Travis were solid...or so she thought.
"No, you don't think we need to have experience on our own! C'mon Travis, you and I both know you can't lie to save your life. Your left eye twitches just like it is right now. If you are going to end our three-year relationship, at least be honest with me; you owe me that at least Travis," Mandy yelled as she yanked her hand away from Travis. As she did this she noticed how his eyes had darkened which indicated he was upset. How dare he be upset! He was the one who wanted to break up. Mandy was the one being left behind so he could hook up, talk about embarrassing and a knife in the back.
Travis put his hand underneath her chin, forcing her to look him in the eye as he said," I love you Mandy, and I will always love you. I just think that we need to see other people; I mean we are only in high school. Once you think about this with a clear head, you will agree with me." Mandy shoved him away from her as she turned and ran down the bridge as fast as she could until she reached the other end that led to the town of Kingsley. She turned behind her to see that Travis had walked away. He hadn't chased after her, but, why would he? She was no longer his concern. As Mandy watched him walk away she noticed how easy it seemed for him to walk away from her, it appeared painless as if she meant nothing, almost as if she had created their whole relationship in her mind.
The tears were burning her eyes and she let them fall down her face freely as she began to imagine the first day she had met Travis and her mind went through all of their memories together up until today, where their story would end. Mandy had never felt so alone in her life. Before Travis she had believed that there was no point in getting close to anyone as they all left anyway, whether by choice or not. Her dad had left her when she was six years old, and her older brother, Cory, had left when she was in 8th grade to go live with their absentee father. All she had was her mom and little brother, Dean, then Travis came along and no matter how hard she tried to lose him or force him to lose interest, he never left or gave up. Next thing she knew they were doing everything together and they fell in love. She finally had someone in her life that was choosing to stay because they loved her for her.
