during the night...

I wake up in a cold sweat, gasping for air. I sit up, blinking rapidly as I came to the realization, It was just a bad dream... My heartrate starts to return to normal. Next, I turn myself over to take a peek at the clock. 3:07 am, I wonder if Cal is back yet.

My curiosity gets the best of me, so I climb out of bed and stumble on my shoes that were tossed to the side. I tiptoe across the flat to Cal's room to be. My fingers slowly turned the doorknob, trying to not wake him if he was sleeping. I peer around the corner to see what I didn't want to see. The room completely empty, the bed untouched, and Cal nowhere to be found.

My stomach dropped.

I am still staring, mouth agape when she claps her hands right in front of my face.

"Uhh, hello?" the girl says, her voice soft and frail as if it would break if she spoke any louder. She looked up at me sideways and her hair flopped in her face slightly.

"Hi, sorry!" I sputter, my face starting to heat up with embarrassment.

"No, don't be sorry," she whispers, barely audible with the noise. "I probably shouldn't be sitting here anyways, so close to the dance floor, I don't really go to clubs all that often."

She moves to get up, but I gently grab her arm.

"I wanna let you in on a little secret," I say to her with a laugh. Bending down, I cupped my hand around her ear. "This is my first time at a club."

Now she's the one to laugh.

"I could tell," she tells me. "Most of the time you were just standing there, or staring off into space." The girl laughs again, but I was onto her.

"So you were spying on me, huh?" I pry, taking the empty seat across from her.

"No..." she trails off. "Just observing."

"Riiiiiight," I say as I cast her a sideways glance. "You wanna tell me your name?"

There's a beat of silence between the two of us.

"It's Sarah. Sarah Close," she answers finally, with a hint of nervousness still in her voice. "And yours mister accuser?"

"The name is Callum McGinley, but most call me just Cal," I say strongly, letting my trusty fake confidence that was just starting to creep in, to envelop me fully.

"Love the name," Sarah smiles wistfully. "It's cute..." she scans me up and down, "like you."

I instantly flush bright red, and I can feel the tips of my ears start to heat up. Sarah must have noticed because her smile grows wider.

"Thank you," I eventually get out, but apparently not loud enough because Sarah proceeds to yell,

"WHAT??"

"I SAID THANK YOU!" I scream, starting to laugh at how stupid this was.

"Oh!" she says, her soft laugh barely coming through the blasting music.

Right as our contagious giggles come to an end, Tobi saunters up to us.

"Hey mannnnnnnn," he drawls, leaning too much onto the small table.

"Hi Tobi, this is Sarah. Sarah, this is my friend Tobi," I introduce them.  Sarah holds her hand up to shake, but Tobi misses hers by a few inches. She moves her hand to join his and takes it up and down.

"I think I need to go homeee Callllll," Tobi yawns. I start to panic, I don't know what to do.

"Yeah buddy, why don't we head on back to the apartment, I'll drive," I tell him, and as I start to get up, he collapses to the floor in a heap.

"He's so drunk!" Sarah sympathizes and bends down to help him up. "Do you need help taking him to your car?"

"Yeah," I say breathlessly. "That would be nice of you."

The two of us heave an unconscious Tobi onto our shoulders as we hoist him off the ground. We walk slowly through the thinning out club and to the parking lot where his car was parked. We slide him into the back seat, and buckle him in before carefully closing the car door. This is where I had to say goodbye. I probably won't ever see her again, I think sadly. The thing is, I didn't want it to end like that.

"Well," Sarah breaks the silence between us. "I kinda, have to go." The parking lot is almost empty, the sound of the busy traffic the only sound. A slight breeze picks up her hair and blows it slightly in her face.

"Oh," I stutter, "Yeah makes sense." Cal, what are you doing?? Ask her for her number, DO SOMEETHING!

"Bye," Sarah says, and starts to walk away. I stare after her, but she only takes a few steps before turning back to face me.

"SarahClose, that's my YouTube, find me there if you want," her final words ringing in the air. Now Sarah leaves for good, her heels echoing in the distance as she disappears into the night.

And in that moment, I knew I would see her again. Soon.
