Chapter 3: Brandon
Later in the evening,in fact it was probably early in the morning; I was awakened to the shrill scream of Gabriela. It was an overwhelming shriek that captured the focus of most in the house. I ran into the bedroom and held her tight. She was bawling and wailing that her head hurt and she was feeling very afraid. I reassured her that all will be well, but as usual, she didn’t believe me.
I went over to the radio and tuned it to her favorite radio station. Thankfully, one of her favorite songs was playing. She laid back down, closed her eyes, and started humming.
“Brandon, will you come lay down with me?’’ she asked. I obviously couldn’t tell her no, so I went over to her, and sat down on the bed. There were a few pillows where I was, so I had to move them in order to make room for me.
“ I am sorry that all this is happening to you,” I apologized. “ I know this must be really hard, but I want you to remember that you will always have me. I will never leave your side, nor will I ever let you be alone.”
“I love you,” she whispered.
I replied by telling her that I loved her as well.
Before she could ever even get the chance to fall back asleep, Grammy called us downstairs for breakfast. She is the type of grandma who has amazingly sweet food that constantly leaves your mouth craving for more. She had made us pancakes. Mine had banana slices with whipped cream, and Gabriela’s had strawberries with chocolate chips. She normally would have whip cream on her pancake, but she asked Grammy if she could just have the whole container so she could squirt some in her mouth at random times.
I am glad Gabriela is blocking out the bad that happened last night. She looks so happy right now. With her whipped cream can and her favorite type of pancake. She absolutely loves Grammy. I don’t blame her though, she has done a lot for us. We want Grammy to adopt us, but she doesn’t have enough money to afford two kids to live in her house permanently.
After we were done finishing our breakfast, Gabriela ran upstairs to get changed. Grammy had just gotten her a new dress that is gray with pink polka dots. She absolutely loved it. She looks so cute in it! Gabriela and Grammy are the only thrills that I have in life. They are the only beings that truly know how to make me smile. That smile was vanished when I suddenly heard a knock at the door.
At first, I wondered if I had actually heard it. Grammy nor Gabriela acted like anything had happened. I then heard another knock. Now I knew this time it was real, because both Gabriela and Grammy stood at attention towards the door. I went over to the window and peeked outside to see who it was. To my surprise, it was someone I never expected to see. I would have thought I would see our father before I would see what I saw. I turned to my sister. She could see the shock on my face.
“Who is it?” she asked
It was mom.
