December, 2009

it was a sunny day in Ilsan,

"Namjoon!"

Without even glancing in the direction where the voice came from, he knew it was his best and only closest friend. Growing up, Namjoon couldn't get along with everyone very well. He knew that not a lot of kids enjoyed his presence, but he liked to think that he was too mature for the kids his age. When kids were busy playing with their game-boys, he was learning a whole new language all by himself. As geeky as it sounds, he loved studying, he always thought that studying will get him somewhere- somewhere nicer and better for him and his family. Namjoon's dream was to be a writer, until the day he discovered rap, writing lyrics, and making a tune that rhymes with it.

"Namjoon! you can't ignore me forever; we live next to each other you know!" he couldn't help but chuckle at his very loud friend.

"I wasn't even ignoring you," he said as he stopped in his step to wait for his friend, only to be greeted with a painful slap on his back. He turned around to see his friend smiling like she had done nothing wrong. He pulled the best angry face he could— he could never be angry at her. She was his weakness and at the same time, his strength.

"I didn't mean for it to hurt! I swear! I was just being playful" she mumbled as she looked away. She's too cute, he thought to himself. "do you want to listen to something?" and his heart flattered when he noticed the tips of her lips rise up.

"Did you write some new lyrics for your rap?" she asked him enthusiastically.

"You know me too well", he still couldn't figure out whether that was a good thing or bad. Only a few months away and they will not be seeing each other as much as they want. A company had scouted him and promised his parents that he will be taken good care of and surprisingly, his parents were very supportive about it. He hasn't told her about it— she still doesn't have a clue that in less than three months, Namjoon will be moving away from Ilsan to pursue his new dream.

He takes her hand in his before they started running towards the park.

Holding hands is nothing new, it is something they have done since they were two. But why is it that ever since he knew he that will be moving away, anything they do together would make his heart beat faster?

They sit on the usual bench— their bench. "why did you make me run? we weren't even that far and we're not in a hurry plus you know how much I dislike running," he stops her soon-will-be a never-ending rant by offering her an earphone, "listen and then give me an unbiased review," she nods without saying a word as his new amateur song now starts playing.

Astonished, that's how she felt. To be frank, the beat was not that good, but the lyrics- the lyrics were beautifully written.

"The lyrics you wrote blew me away, Namjoon. For someone who is fifteen years old, you sure know how to play with words. As for the beat, I think you may need more practice. But then again I know nothing about music so", she flashes a smile at Namjoon. "Joonie, you should focus on music. I have a feeling you will be very famous and you know how my guts are always right!"

Namjoon couldn't take it anymore, he doesn't want to and he can't hide anything from his best friend, especially something this big.

"Listen, you know how much I love and cherish our friendship, right?" he rests his back on the bench and runs his fingers through his already messy dark hair.

"Where are you going with this? It doesn't feel like a good news" her palms are getting sweaty, her heart is beating faster than before, and she doesn't like the tone of his voice. She knows very well that whatever words he will be saying next will tear her apart. This was always how he delivered bad news, with this specific tone. Does he not want me to be near him? she thought.

"I'm moving away from Ilsan, a company has scouted me and they will be training me until they think I'm ready to make music and let the world hear it-"

"Namjoon! I can't believe you hid this from me! oh my god that's- that's great news! You'll be going to Seoul and you will be chasing your dream and oh my god!" she cuts him off with lies after lies. She's happy for him, but imagining not being able to see him whenever she wants is not easy. He doesn't need you to make it harder for him, you have to support him, that's what friends are for, she thought to herself- just smile.

"I'm sorry, Areum"

"What are you apologizing for?"

"I'm hurting you, aren't I?" he looks at her to see her eyes swell with tears, "I promise you I will call every day and I know it's not the same as being next to each other-"

"Yes Namjoon, I'm hurt. I'm so upset. But I can never stop you from reaching your dream. As much as I love being next to you, I understand and I support you. I would never stop you from leaving,"

"I'm sorry" he pulls her into his arms,

And time extends itself for those who love,

Even without them knowing.
