After a gruelling two hour shift, I enter the break room with the intent to eat my completely filling granola bar when I notice that one of my coworkers, Mary to be precise, was also on her break.
"Hello Tabitha, how are you?" Mary questioned.
"I'm doing swell Mary, how are you?"
Of course this was the only logical response to a question of such proportions, even so Mary gave me a look of surprise. I've been around long enough to know that I should have said something more to the standards of this period, but I've got a lot of time on my calloused hands, so what were the consequences of one little mistake. Mary quickly changed back to her calm, welcoming face of small talk, inviting me for a conversation of little meaning.
"I've been all right, these work days only seem to be get longer the more I'm here!" Mary sounded like a mother that drank wine on Sunday nights to the sounds of her children whining about their bedtime.
"Oh it'll get better, time has a way of deceiving even the sharpest of minds," I would know, I've seen the likes of many tragedies, ones that only appear because of what time has done to the minds of people.
We carry on our banter as I grab a cup of warm tea to sip as the duration of my break wastes away. I can't help but feel a distant connection to Mary, almost as if I had known her my whole existences, a connection I only felt with one other person on this earth... But, that person has long gone, rotted away like the time I'm bound to like a prisoner.
Tabitha was a fresh life, They had only been her a few days now so They were still used to being their regular self in the deepest parts of the cosmos.
"Tabitha? You still in there?" Mary said with a smile in her words.
"Of course, just got a little lost in though for the moment," I gave a slight laugh at the end of my statement.
Hopefully, she would be like everyone else in this forsaken existence and ignore my strangeness. I only wished my break would be over soon.
