~Tyler~
Beep. Beep. Beep.
I groan, rolling over and trying to hit the snooze button, instead knocking the alarm to the floor, which did the trick. Sweet silence. Suddenly, my door bursts open, banging against the wall. I groggily open one eye to see my cousin Amanda standing in the doorway, her arms thrown out for dramatic effect. She runs over and jumps on my bed, kneeing me in the stomach in the process.
"I have a brilliant plan!" She shouts. I rub my eyes, giving her a glare.
"And why do I need this plan of yours?" I ask.
"Because you have no friends." She says matter-of-factly, crossing her arms. I gave her another glare, but sat up. She smirks knowingly. "This is my plan: a new girl is moving in across the street. I know this because I saw her parents moving boxes labeled: Penelope's Bedroom. You go over there, be nice to her parents and all, then offer to show her around the school, or the town, or something. Become friends with her before anyone else, and voila! She'll never want anyone else." She says. I blink.
"That's actually a really good plan." I say quietly. She nods.
"I know! But first we need to bake cookies. Cookies always make a good first impression." She says, then hops off my bed and runs out of the room.
I slowly get up, standing and moving to the doorway. I run down the stairs and into the kitchen. Amanda is standing by the cutting board, checking all the ingredients. While her back is to me, I run up, wrap my arms around her waist, and lift her in the air.
"I love you, Mandy-Pandy!" I coo loudly. She laughs, flailing her legs everywhere.
"Put me down, Ty, so we can make cookies!" She says. I shake her around a bit, then put her down and pat her on the head.
She huffs and slides the mixing bowl in front of me.
"Put the milk, eggs, butter, flour, sugar, and that in." She says, pointing to everything. I put everything in. Next she walks over a weird machine thing with a whisk on the end. "Now put the bowl under here." She instructs. I walk over and place the bowl under." She presses a button on the side and the whisk lowers into the bowl and begins going in circles. It makes me dizzy so I look away. While its spinning, Amanda pours in chocolate chips.
She presses the button again and the whisker stops. It raises out, chunks of dough stuck on it. She scrapes it back into the bowl then carries the bowl over to a pan. She takes a chunk of cookie dough and rolls it into a ball, placing it on the tray. Then she does it again. I join in, and soon enough, the tray is full. She slides the tray into the oven and presses Bake. Then she gets two spoons and hands me one.
We eat the rest of the cookie dough while the cookies bake. The oven dings, and she pulls them out and fills a basket with them. She turns to me.
"You should probably get dressed before you bring these over." She says. I laugh and turn around, running upstairs and into my room.
I put on a simple white t-shirt and cargo shorts. I pull on a black beanie over my curly brown hair and head back downstairs. Amanda hands me the basket of cookies and practically shoves me out the front door. She slams it behind me and presses her face to window beside it. I slowly walk across the street and stop in the driveway.
I shuffle up the driveway and up the path to the front door. When I reach the door, I glance back at Amanda. She gives me an encouraging smile. I take a deep breath, turn around, and ring the doorbell. I hear scuffling inside, and then the door opens to reveal a bedraggled middle-aged man in his pajamas. He smiles tiredly at me.
"Hi, I'm your neighbor." I turn around and point across the street. "I live there." The mans smile widens.
"Oh, that's nice. Sorry about the mess." He says, glancing back into his house. "We're still moving in." He chuckles. "I'm Daniel," A woman who looks about his age steps up behind him and smiles at me. She has short brown hair tied back in a pony tail. "And this is my wife, Rose. My daughters upstairs." He says. I smile and shake his hand. I hold up the cookies. He takes them and hands them to his wife. "Why don't you come inside?" He steps back and I step inside. There are boxes everywhere.
He leads me over to a small brown couch and motions for me to sit on it. I sit. He sits across from me in an armchair and his wife brings me a mug of coffee. I gladly accept it and thank her, taking a sip.
"So...where'd you move from?" I ask.
"Atlanta." He replies. I nod. An awkward silence fills the room.
"Well, is your daughter going to go to Blue Valley High School?" I ask. He nods.
"Yes, she's starting tomorrow." He says.
"I could give her a tour around the town," I offer.
"She'd love that," His wife, Rose, replied with a smile. "She's new here and doesn't quite know her way around so it'd help to have a sort of tour guide." The sound of feet padding downstairs reached my ears and I turned. A petite girl with frazzled brown hair and bangs stood at the foot of the stairs.
"Mom, have you seen my—" She froze when she saw me, then turned and ran upstairs, but not before I could catch a glimpse of her large, round, stomach.
The new girl was...pregnant?!
A/N: So how do you like it?
