I took the elevator down to earth and slipped out into a noisy street in New Orleans. 5 o'clock. Downtown. Do or die hour. I still had some daylight to waste, demons to hunt, laundry to do. The usual. Slipping onto the subway I pulled out a small card crumpled up in my pocket.
" In case you get bored" she smiled, her fingers lingering on my neck, making goosebumps ripple at her touch. I downed my vodka in a single gulp and spun with a witty retort on my lip, but she was gone-"
"Hey man, watch where your going!" I snapped back to reality, and walked right into a thick-set man. Murmuring an apology, I slipped by, holding the phone to my ear.
"Giselle's here" a honeyed- tone received me on the other end of the line
"Hey yeah, it's uh Nixon" I shot a look around as I turned into an alley
"Nixon? Well look who had a change of heart" she chirped. I could sense her dimpled grin through the phone.
"Not likely. I was wondering if you had any news for me" I asked turning into a high street. The sound of sirens echoed in the distance.
"Well, your no fun" she sighed, the sound of clinking glass came from the other end of the receiver.
"Come on Giselle, I know your not stupid. You got something for me?" I snapped
She sighed again, this time more wearily "Nothing particularly thrilling, just the usual bums."
"Kind of like that bar upstairs"
"Probably not as crowded" she responded "There's a rumour going around though, that he's coming, he's coming to town"
"What?" My heart thumped in my chest, slipping up into my throat
"Something I heard from the big room up in the sky actually" she simpered
"Real cute Giselle. How'd you get in?" I asked
"If you ask people nicely enough you can get near enough anything. It's amazing where good manners can get you"
"I don't know about you and good manners. More like you, your flirting and my wallet" I said, finally reaching my destination.
"I'm right outside"
"Want a drink?" She asked
"Not now, but I have a bad feeling I'm going to need one soon" I said, trying to dispel the butterflies in my stomach. Planes. Rogue fighter jets.
"Listen, I got a problem here. This kid. Girl from upstate. She's got a camera, and she keeps coming around, asking questions, nosing around. You know the type. Idiot humans thinking there onto something big" she snorted
"Well she might be, who knows?" I said
"Just get rid of her please? We all got more pressing problems to deal with"
"Me and you both Giselle" I sighed
"You'll be careful, won't you?" She asked
"No point pretending that you'll be crying if I die. You'll be crying if you don't get the car, or the villa" she giggled at my response
"I gotta run anyway, got business downtown" I chanced a look upwards
"Kick some demon ass for me- and if you see him, just get out of his way. Don't try and be a hero" she said, her tone mellowing
"That's kind of my job Giselle" I deadpanned
"If I get any news from down under, you'll be the first to know. Get rid of that girl. Cascadia something" she said before she disconnected the call.
Real charming, I thought.
