001.
PARTNERED WITH THE ENEMYWITH A ROLL OF THE EYES, NINA GREY SWUNG IN HER CHAIR AS THE INFAMOUS SUPERGIRL WAS PRAISED WITH A ROUND OF APPLAUSE ONCE AGAIN.
"Good God" she mumbled under her breath. Three years ago, when she was welcomed into the Department of Extra-Normal Operations, she thought she would be stopping aliens, not fighting alongside one.
As Supergirl walked through the foyer of the headquarters, her latest criminal in hand, she smiled at all the cheers and whistles given to her by their colleagues.
The blonde superhero and her team of fellow agents had been hunting the latest Fort Rozz prisoner, a vicious Hellgramite, for several weeks and had finally caught the horrifying creature. It's jaw hung loose as it was dragged across the concrete floor.
Nina reached down into her pocket and shuffled for her phone and grabbed a pair of tangled headphones. She sighed, and slowly began to unravel the messed wire, unaware she was being watched."You should really grateful, for what she is doing for the city, you know" said the familiar voice of Winn Schott as he leaned over his desk. He flattened his red tie which hung over his blue checked shirt.
Nina looked up, her long dark hair flipping across her shoulders as she did so.
It wasn't like she wasn't grateful for all of the hard work Supergirl did for National City, in fact Nina had nothing against her or her alias Kara Danvers. She just hated aliens.
"I am" she replied quietly giving Winn a soft smile before returning her concentration back to the tangle in her hands.
"I'm sure if you talk to her about it, she would be more than happy to help" he assured her.
Nina clenched the coil tightly at the mention of the subject.
"How could she help, Winn?" She snapped. Her heart dropped at the mention of the incident that changed her life nearly ten years ago.
"My parents are gone and they're not coming back" she glared at her green eyed friend, who looked at her sympathetically.
She could feel her cheeks growing hotter as tears pricked her eyes.
Quickly Nina broke her gaze with the former CatCo employee and returned her attention to the dozens of paperwork scattered across her desk.
Nina's job required her to fill out and sign the thousands of recounts of Supergirl's arrests. Each and every one.
If there was one thing she hated more than aliens, it was doing an aliens paperwork. Despite being a trained bio-chemist, she was stuck in the dead end job of administration.
Since Supergirl's debut, Nina had wrote hundreds of reports ranging from the violent military weapon gone rogue, the Red Tornado to the blonde doppelgänger, Bizarro. She placed the untangled earphones into her ears as loud music blared through the earpieces. She reached for a pen and began to sign off on the latest report.
She tapped her foot to the beat of The Chainsmokers as she tried to ignore the memories which threatened her mind.
After her parents went missing nearly ten years ago, Nina had tried her hardest to forget everything from that frightful night. But every now and again, eventually one memory slipped through the gap.Nina jumped out of her daze as a strong hand rested on her shoulder. As she looked up her dark eyes were met with those of Hank Henshaw. Another recently outed alien, only this one happened to be her boss. She pulled the earphones out of her ears.
"Can I see you for a moment?" His deep voice boomed. At first glance, Director Henshaw appeared to be intimidating. Maybe it was his strong build, his solemn expression, or maybe it was the colours he wore - all black. But after working with the man for a few years, Nina had realised that he was actually a kind man who cared as much about saving the planet as anybody else. She nodded and closely followed the man to his office.
Her dark boots tapped lightly on the concrete floor. She listened to the whispers of her colleagues as a thousand different scenarios ran through her head, none of them ending well. The director lead Nina to a large room in the far side of the building. The office was carpeted and furnished with a large desk and two chairs in the centre of the room. They entered the office and the door closed behind them.
"Take a seat" he gestured towards one of the chairs before sitting down himself.
"I think its time we move you out of administration" he said bluntly.
"And into something, that best suits your abilities".
Nina let out a breath she hadn't known she had been holding as she was overwhelmed with relief.
"Thank you, sir" she said, trying to contain the smile that was spreading. They both sat in silence for a few moments as the director flipped through the file which sat on the desk.
"You'll be working in the lab, alongside Alex Danvers" he said, looking up from the file.
Nina's smile grew larger at the mention of working in the lab. She had waited three long years and now her moment was finally here.
"You'll be aiding and assisting Supergirl, and her sister, with identifying foreign material".
Her mind began to race once again at the mere mention of working directly alongside an alien.
"Is that alright?" Hank asked Nina, who had been staring at the floor for a while.
"Yes, sir. Thank you" she said, now standing.
She shook the director's outstretched hand and left his office. As she made her way down the hallway she couldn't shake the feeling that something good might come out of working with an alien.
