CHAPTER 1
Poke. Poke.
Poke. Poke.
'Wake up, Bells, we're here.'
I open my eyes to see my dad at the driver's seat, staring at me.
I blink, wondering where I am.
Then everything comes crashing down. Dad's promotion. The move. All the friends I left behind.
I try to get out of the car to see my new home. But my legs don't seem to like that idea. I'm on the ground before I can blink.
Dad rushes to my side, and I find myself enveloped in his arms.
'My clumsy little girl.' he chuckles. 'Stai bene?'
He tries to rub my back and that sends spasms of pain trough my whole body.
You're probably confused. Let me explain.
Ever since I was born, I've had this terrible pain in my back. The doctors NEVER found out why. I don't know, either, so every day, my back looks like I have permanent sunburn.
... 'Turn around and take a look at the cabina.'
The house was bellissimo.
'Oh wow, è così bello, padre. Lo adoro! Sembra proprio come la vecchia cabina di nonno a Firenze!' I said, amazed by what I saw.
It was three stories high and made out of boulders, redwood and stone bricks. The surrounding grounds were green grass and a gravel path circling it. There were also a lot of pine trees flanking the house. It was perfect. When Dad told me we were moving one of my conditions for following is that we chose somewhere near a forest, closed from civilisation.
He was more than willing to oblige.
I let out a low whistle. Dannazione.
If I could marry a house this house would be sporting an engagement ring.
Dad smiled slowly, happy about my reaction.
'You see that small room at the very top?,' he said.
'Yeah?'
'It's yours.' I squealed. He knows I love high places.
'Let's get unpacked, I need to go to the office and introduce myself. I trust you'll be okay?'
'Yeah, sure.'
I loved my new room.
It had thick wooden walls, and a tiny bed holed up in a corner , huge shelves above it, and an antique – looking dresser. Best of all, it had a ladder leading up to a latch that opened into the roof.
When I came, I'd added red bedsheets, three or four teddy bears, my fluffy brown floor cushion from our old home, a blue carpet and a cutesy little plaque for my wall.
Perrrrrrfection.
I Iaid my clothes down on my bed.
Just before I enterd the bathroom, I heard dad holler, 'Bye, sweetheart!'
'Bye!' I shouted back.
I walked into the bathroom.
Before I entered the bath, I got a flash of my face in the mirror.
Waist-long brown hair with unusual grey strands, big boring brown eyes, pink lips that aren't too plump or too thin, dimples when I smile and a tiny cowlick. I'm 5'9" and cosidered tall for a very recently turned sixteen year old girl.
But I guess you could call me a plain Jane.
As i was busy washing my hair when the pain hit. Tendrils of pain shot up my spine, sending me into extreme shock. As my body jerked, blood began to flow from my shoulder blades, turning the water pink, then red.
I screamed.
I ran my hands over my back, feeling a sharp point under my shoulder.
Gritting my teeth, I pulled on it, only to pull a white feather dotted with blood.
The pain vanished instantly, only to be replaced by shock.
What the hell???!
I immediately got out and put on my bathrobe, staring at the feather.
Omg. What the hell just happened? I hope it's just a nightmare.
I need to call dad. But before I could do anything, I felt cold all over.
Before the darkness took me away.
HEY THERE!!!
