Armin sighed, keeping his head down as he neared his destination. He had been invited to a new year's party by an unknown source (he had received an invite via text from a number he didn't recognise), and he was incredibly nervous.

He wasn't 'popular' as far as the term went; he tended to stick to his rather small group of friends and tried to stay away from people he didn't know.

He began to wonder, as he made his way into the house; blending in with a small crowd so as not to be noticed, whether or not he was actually supposed to be invited in the first place.

The invite had been sent to him personally, he noted, which brought forth yet more negative thoughts.

Maybe he was going to be ridiculed, invited as a joke to provide some entertainment for the other guests. He shook his head slightly, trying to keep his negative thoughts to a minimum - he was there to enjoy himself.

Upon entering, the crowd he was hiding in slowly dispersed until he was completely alone, allowing him to fully take in the surroundings. Armin noticed straight away that he did not fit in, as far as stereotypes went.

He was short, thin and nerdy, and had 'girly' hair which he kept in a ponytail; however the room he was in was occupied with taller, muscular boys with short messy hair and an air of confidence.

Armin was quite self-conscious and usually opted out of large social gatherings such as the one he was in right then; but something repelled him from leaving, and he decided against questioning what it was.

He decided to make his way to a quieter room near the back of the house, hoping to find at least one person he knew, and fortunately for him, he found someone he could socialise with without any trouble.

"Hey, Marco." Armin smiled, breathing deep with relief as he finally felt a little less anxious about his situation. The brunette turned to face him and grinned, patting the seat beside him for Armin to sit down.

"Ah, Armin, I didn't think you'd turn up-" Marco started, turning to pick some food from the table behind them. "-I'm glad that you did, though." Marco was one of Armin's closest friends, and they were both soon to start at the same school. This knowledge made starting at a new school a little easier on both of them.

The party was soon in full swing, with music playing throughout the house and people coming and going from every direction. Unfortunately for Armin and Marco, none of their other friends were anywhere to be seen. They decided the best way to pass the time would be to simply sit there and try to blend in.

"Armin, are you okay?" Marco had asked this many times throughout the night whenever he noticed an uncomfortable expression on Armin's face, to which the blonde boy would always reply with "Yeah, I'm just a little tired."

Armin sighed, leaning back against the chair he was sat in and pulling out his phone to check the time. It felt like he had been there for hours, simply conversing with Marco and sitting in comfortable silence while the others made friends and actually had fun.

Armin began to feel rather bitter, wondering why he'd even turned up in the first place. He allowed his thoughts to run wild, the negativity from earlier flooding back and leaving his mind reeling. He could've been sat there for half an hour, simply delving deeper and deeper into his thoughts if not for a tug on his foot followed by a thud.
