"Come on, Alice! We'll miss the Shift if you don't hurry." I stamped my foot, impatient. "Good," she muttered, annoyed. "You know I don't want to go. In fact, why don't you go yourself?" "Maybe I will, if your going to act like this." I exclaimed, exasperated. "Wasn't it you who suggested we go the other night?" She was so stubborn, and you never knew which Alice you would get. It was like a game show; would you get Choice A, fun, lighthearted Alice, or Choice B, worrisome, motherly Alice? "Yeah," she muttered. "But that was when the Inside first went out. Everyone was going to go down. Can we please just go back?" I could tell she really didn't want to go, that it was more than just fear of being caught. But how bad could it be? I mean, I could just say I took a wrong turn going to retrieve my rations. It happened all the time. Then I heard a rumble. "Dang it, we are going to miss the Shift" I spat. "Please come Alice, I'll owe you another favor?" Once again, she paused to think. "Fine. But remember the first: don't tell anyone. And I'll get back to you for the second." "Yes!" I gasped, grabbing her hand and sprinting towards the Shaft. I rounded the corner, racing towards the small platform suspended by next to nothing, in the middle of a gap in the floor about 10 total feet across. I figured that the jump was maybe 3 feet on each side, so I'd just need a running start. "Are you gonna come?" I questioned Alice. "It's not like I have anything better to do, and..." She trailed off, staring at the shaft. "Ummm..... Elle? The shaft is lowering. We are gonna miss it!" I started, turning to see the Shaft lowering at a terrific pace. "C'mon!" I grabbed her hand, and took a running leap. I landed with inches to spare, Alice landing on top of me, and we went rolling towards the opposite edge.
