After Samuel Mitths had a missing report sent, my father called. He said he would be gone the rest of the month, and that a new person would come to watch me. After Samuel 'left' I didn't want another babysitter, but he arrived. Mr. Cannon. He was tall, and very muscly. "Hello. I am here to protect you and your siblings, you are not to contact a Thomas Williams or a Matthew Willster." He was broad and acted more like a bodyguard. My sister Marci was too young to understand, but Max, I didn't know. He never spoke much.
That night I offered mr. Cannon some tea or food, but I didn't hear him move until I was in bed. I heard rustling for the longest time, I did grow drowsy but I was to frightened, and I didn't want to make the same mistake as earlier. Right before I was about to fall asleep, I heard a chair shuffle. I got up and grabbed a bat. Quietly I slipped down the steps, then I saw the man tie down mr. Cannon. He moved quick and silent. Then he walked toward the door. That's when I stepped out and swung my bat at his feet. He jumped over it, and dragged my babysitter away out the door. I chased him but after he fled into the night, it was useless. Another man, I must say would not come back.
This time, the missing files of both babysitters vanished. They weren't relevant any more. My father told me not to worry, that another babysitter would be at home, when I came home from working. I sent my sisters to school, and walked with Max to school too, then I walked past the Willster house. I wish now that I could have read that letter, if I remembered. But it still lay under my bed. I looked at the old house, one thing that did not change is that I feel bad for the Willsters.
Our new babysitter, was shorter. He seemed nicer. He was more interested in being our friend.
"Hello, Sophia. I am Mr. Adam MacRoy. I'm sure you are very upset about your former babysitters, but I assure you everything is fine and sorted out. We will go out to the store tomorrow," he was kind. Which made it worse when, it was his life assured not to survive.
The next morning, we went to the store. And on the way home we passed Thomas' house. He was outside. Mowing his grass vertically, instead of horizontally, because he thought it kept the bugs away. Mr. MacRoy stood between me and Thomas, and we kept our heads down. That night we snacked on peanuts, while we played cards.
When I went to bed, I felt safer. I find it hard to admit, but it was easier to fall asleep. When I awoke, Mr. MacRoy was awake, with breakfast made. He had my sisters set up too, and Max sat it the corner of the table silently eating.
"Good morning, Sophia. Marci already started to eat" he was very kind. I sat down and began chewing at the eggs.
"Sophia, where's father?" Marci asked.
"He left on a trip with mother," I made up a lie, easy enough that MacRoy could follow. After sending my sisters off to school, and Max, I sat in the living room. A knock was heard at the door, and Adam told me it was the wind, then he jumped up and said he was going on a walk.
I peered through the window blinds, and saw a familiar man approach MacRoy, then the blinds flapped, and MacRoy was gone. Not again. After my sisters and brother came home and went to bed, I thought about the vanishing. Once was a sad tragedy, twice was a coincidence, but three vanishing human beings, that must have been on purpose.
