It was strange how he was the one that had met Hayley first, bonded with her and even was the father of their child
and yet she still preferred his brother's love and care over his even at the 8 years they had known eachother even though 5 were spent with him locked in a dungeon hayley raising their daughter alone and Elijah in a coffin she still loved his brother and not even the impact it would eventually have on their daughter changed that but he was not one to be open about his affections specially when Elijah was involved as History had that every woman they had both wanted preferred Elijah even when they were human
His first love Tatia and even Katerina at one point preferred to spend time with Elijah but he couldn't help but think maybe with Hayley it would be different afterall they did have a daughter and that does change quite a lot but still their was no change and he was not willing to throw his pride away just to get rejected
or maybe it was just getting rejected by Hayley that he was afraid of since with Caroline no matter how many times she rejected him he didn't stop but that was just infatuation he wasn't hurt by her rejection because he knew what she thought of him but with Hayley it was different because they knew eachother's darkest secrets and never judged one another
He could never quite understand her feelings towards him sometimes she was cold but others he would catch her looking at him with so much love and warmth in her eyes it gave him joy
That was the problem if he knew she didn't feel the same towards him he wouldn't have that tiny bit of hope that Hayley, Hope and Him could actually be a true family but every time he started feeling hopeless he would catch her looking at him with that same look and no matter how much he tried he couldn't convince himself to love her as just the mother of his child.

at this point it would probably take him 300 years to just gather up the courage to try and confess about his feelings just to end up losing the courage then spend 500 more years watching Hayley and Elijah together until he finally broke and spoke of his true feelings
It was rejection from the ones he loved that he also fear the most
