The Ancient Ones

Chapter 1

Of all the disturbing and scary things in the world not knowing what would happen next is what scared Viola Aiden the most. Not knowing if you would return home from a simple ride to the store.  Not knowing if you would be bitten by something venomous the next time you ventured into the woods. But worst of all not knowing what someone is thinking, that scared her the most.

.

Viola laid there in the dry green grass staring up at the sky, just thinking of life and all its’ perplexing mysteries and odd surprises. Fluffy cream colored clouds floated smoothly across the azure sky. A warm summer breeze rolled across the field she was lying in. She felt content there, only a few people knew of the field. Most of the time though she was alone with her thoughts.

She rested comfortably on the soft dried out grass, her long chocolate colored hair splayed out around her. Her emerald green eyes locked on the sky watching birds fly overhead and clouds drift around lazily.

“Viola?” A familiar male voice cut through the silence, she shot up and looked around dazed seeking out who had called upon her.

“Viola?!” Another voice rang through, this time female. Knowing immediately who the voices belonged to she waited a moment for them to make their way back there.

An idea sparked and she jumped up and silently ran over to a tall oak tree. She jumped up the branches carefully till she was masked by a thick bunch of leaves. After testing the branch’s sturdiness she crouched and waited patiently.

Viola Aiden as well as the other half of the population in the town they live in are vampires as well as almost all of her friends.

Viola stayed crouched down, while being very careful to stay concealed she peeked through the leaves carefully. Her friend Kadence Summers sauntered through some bushes and weeds and looked around impatiently. Her boyfriend of 3 months followed shortly after, also looking around curiously.

A smirk played on her lips as she amusedly watched them search for her on the ground not knowing their efforts were utterly futile. Slowly and quietly she crouched down again like a cat waiting to pounce on its’ unsuspecting prey. Quickly she leapt from the tree toward an unsuspecting Julian. She remembered doing this before when they were all little though the tree had been much shorter. It had been a summer like this and they had just found the meadow when they were all exploring the woods. They had decided to play hide and seek.

“One, two, three…..” Julian called out, he had the back of his arm pressed against his eyes and he was facing a tree. The rough tree bark was pressing against the pale skin of his arm, though he didn’t seem to notice.

“Four, five, six…” Viola found a tree and jumped onto the lowest branch so that she was shrouded by the leaves, the whole time she sat there she considered what was going to happen next.

“Seven, eight, nine…..” Kadence quickly ducked down behind a large bush and covered her mouth to keep from giggling.

“TEN, READY OR NOT HERE I COME!” Julian yelled out to the seemingly empty meadow. He excitedly brushed his light brown hair away from his dark brown eyes, which were sparkling joyously. He quickly gazed around and dashed around to potential hiding spots.
