no sleep

The cold wind wisped against your pink cheeks almost bringing a hiss out of your mouth from the sting. It was close to 1 in the morning but you refused to sleep, instead opting to stare at the moon having the breeze put you to sleep rather than do it willingly.

It wasn't out of being stubborn or having insomnia, but more so of fear. The other night you had been laying in bed, dozing off into a deep sleep before you felt the duvet covering your body "slip" off. Of course, just worrying about trying to stay warm in your half sleep state you pulled it up only for it to be yanked back down. Even in your drowsy state you shot up scared to death, fumbling around to turn on your night lamp with shaky hands.

Once light illuminated the room, your eyes jotted everywhere looking at every corner of the room frantically.

Oh what a night that was trying to sleep

you woke up every 10 minutes checking your surroundings. Something in your gut telling you someone was watching you even though no one was present in the room.

That wasn't the only thing that drove you to sleepless nights though. Whatever "it" was continued to harass you every night. It started with just the covers. you would feel it get yanked off of you almost every other night. You had looked up everything you could about getting spirits to go away, opting to bring a priest from a local church to bless your home. It only worked for a few days but when whatever the priest did weared off, "it" wasn't too happy about what you had done.

You could always feel it as you tried to rest. your chest would feel like it was caving in, your breaths would get shorter and shorter, you'd sweat bullets in less than a second.

It was certainly the most terrifying thing you've ever experienced in life.

you were on your bed reading a book series you had been trying to finish, drowning out everything that could possibly be going on around you. When you focused on things you usually wouldn't even hear anything, a dangerous habit you'd develop. The book that kept your attention captivated fell from your hands eventually, not by your doings though. Almost as if it had been taken away from you.

"wha-!" You exclaimed as you felt pricks dig into your thigh, not hard enough to tear skin but also not gentle enough for you not to feel pain from it. You watched five dents drag from the upper part of your thigh down to your knee as if someone's hand was scratching you. A piercing scream came from your mouth as you watched in horror. Before you could even think about anything else you shot up and ran out to your bathroom, locking yourself in there.

You stayed in the bathroom all day in an on and off frenzy of different mental states. By time you left out the sun was going down, the evening glow shining on your skin as the world was about to transition into night.

You lived alone so it was no one but you. It was sad considering you were at such a young, youthful, age but due to circumstances it brought this burden onto you. At a young age your parents passed away in a fire at the house you grew up in. Your parents weren't close to any family and lost contact with most of them a long time ago so you didn't have any other relatives to lean on. You barely even knew your immediate family which was a result of your parents cutting them off long before you were born. Another result of them eloping due to their relationship not being accepted.

When they passed away you were put in foster care. You went from family to family for a long time, some good and some bad. When you turned 15 you were adopted by a family but they weren't a loving family whatsoever. They made it known that you were just an adopted child and weren't apart of the family. You were just an asset for them to get a check every month.

So instead of running to someone to calm you down, you sat under a quilt that held your childhood memories staring blankly at the TV that was playing reruns from old shows you haven't seen in god knows how long. You were mentally not at peace whatsoever but you weren't going to lose sanity.
