Gary approached and knocked on the door. He was at Mason's house, maybe the killer's house. Someone was home. He could hear a TV and footsteps inside.
The detective's knock was quickly answered by a tall black male. The man looked confused and concerned. "Hey... uhh... Can I help you?"
It was clear that this man was not expecting the police to be the ones knocking. Gary watched the man swallow hard as he spoke.
"Are you Mason?" Gary didn't waste time. He wanted answers.
"Yes sir, I'm Mason. Is there a problem officer?" The man was visibly shaken with worry. He was already beginning to sweat.
"Do you know this woman?" Gary pulled out a photo of Jenna and showed it to Mason. He looked at the picture and nodded.
"Yes sir, that's Jenna. Is everything okay?" Mason was concerned.
Detective Mills ignored the question and asked one of his own, "Would you mind coming down to the police station Mason?"
"No sir. Not at all, but what is this all about?" Mason knew something was wrong. He knew it was bad.
The television that Gary had heard inside was in the living room. He could see it behind Mason. The local news was on. It was showing a familiar house.
"This shocking story just in," the news reporter started, "A woman and five kids were found dead in a house on Rosemont Avenue this morning. Police say carbon monoxide poisoning was the cause of this tragedy."
The reporter continued telling more about the incident. The detective's eyes returned back to Mason. He was turned around looking at the television. As Mason listened, he began to cry.
Detective Mills left the house shortly after. He didn't have any hard evidence to rule out Mason, but his reaction to the news was all Gary needed for the moment. If Mason was the killer, it was accidental.
Gary would come back to him if needed. Perhaps Mason would come to him with a confession of guilt. Rather than taking him in for questioning, he had left his card with the heartbroken man. Gary was far more interested in Joseph now.
