The warm sun beamed down through smoke. It hit me right in the eye as soon as I woke. Loud wind almost covered up the sound of my friends snoring, all huddled in a pile from the cold, all smothered around Craig and I. Tyler was in front of me, facing me, with an arm over my torso. I tucked my head into his chest. Craig was beside me. With his knees tucked into his chest and his butt pressed into the small of my back, he muttered and wriggled under the influence of a dream. Luke had his arm thrown over both of us. Occasionally, his arm would brush Tyler's, and -even in sleep- they would whip away from eachother.
Wait. Smoke?
Shit shit shit.
I pulled myself out of the sleeping pile. I couldn't focus, but I knew we had to get out of there. Toxic, black, baby clouds were pulled off the giant one and sent at us. The land under them was dark and I could see trees and grass in that direction starting to suffocate and whither.
Okay. Okay. Maybe it's just from a house fire. Fuck. That cloud is too big. I gotta wake everyone u-
"Jon?"
I whirled toward the unfamiliar voice. I almost couldn't hear it over my own thoughts. I whispered, "Hello? Who was that?"
A tiny grunt. "Lui. Co-come here."
"Oh my God, man. You sound- you sound terrible. Are you... getting better?"
Lui ignored my comment, quietly wheezing.
I walked around to the other side of the boxes. David was beside Lui, holding his arm. Marcel was parallel to them with a jacket draped over himself.
"Keep your voice low," Lui begged, "just look."
With a small burst of energy he twisted his neck to the left, pulling his shirt collar back. It exposed a small scrape was on his shoulder.
"W-what's that from?" I asked.
"The zombie. In my tent. I. Had on my hoodie. It couldn't bite me. But it still got teeth through," Lui grunted, taking deep breaths between each statement.
I bit my lip. "Fuck. I was expecting this- but I still don't know what to do. Have you to-told anyone else?"
Lui shook his head no.
"No one else knows. But I know what you need to do. Marcel's gun-"
"No!' I shrieked, "Lui, I fucking won't!"
David and Marcel woke up quickly, glaring up at me. Lui quickly let his shirt collar go and laid his arm back down, glaring at me.
"Jon, wot the fok," David mumbled.
I opened my mouth to say something.
"Shut up, shut your mouth. Lui is layin' there dyin' and your fokin' yellin' at him? What's wrong with you!"
Marcel was grumbling to himself and covering his ears with the jacket.
"D... avid," Lui said, "it's alright. I s-said something I shouldn't have."
David jumped up like something stung him. "Lui?"
Lui pointed up at the clouds. "Jon found smoke."
....
"Well fok."
----
We made a chain, passing boxes down the line, then moving down about ten feet. David didn't help much, he was taking care of Lui. Soon we were on our way out of the storm drain and into the woods. It was getting colder, almost cold enough to snow. After twenty minutes we couldn't see the concrete of the drain through the trees. After an hour we were completely isolated, tripping over thick vines and roots, getting stuck with thorns. Archie stuck near me.
It was weird; I had to pass boxes to Luke. He wouldn't acknowledge me. But I didn't think about that too much. I couldn't keep my thoughts off Lui.
He's gonna be a zombie. Does he really need to suffer like that? I can't kill him. Can't bring myself to. A mercy kill is still murder.
"Hey, dudes! It's time to take a break," Luke called.
I set down my box and kneeled on the ground. The work gave an escape from the cold. But now that everyone was sweaty the freezing air was unbearable. Tyler kneeled beside me and cupped his hands beside my ear.
"Wanna go somewhere and warm up?" He whispered, "I've been thinking about you all day."
I didn't even think before I spoke. "Yes."
He dragged me up to my feet and we rushed into the woods. Before I knew it we were on top of eachother, biting and kissing like animals.
"I hope we don't get interrupted this time," I whispered.
"Yeah," Tyler said, "we don't have a gun now."
I snorted and pushed my lips against his, feeling his hot breath on my face. We both smelled horrible but it didn't matter; we had settled into the cold, wet grass with him below me. Tyler pushed his knee up between my legs and I rocked back against it.
"Fuck, Jon. You need to brush your teeth."
I bit his lip hard and let my hand trail down his chest, stopping right at his hips. He got the point. Eagerly he kissed my neck, nipping my sensitive skin. In return I unbuttoned his pants and pulled out his half-hard cock. A large shiver rocked his body the second I touched it.
"We gotta make this quick."
"Mhm," Tyler replied, mouth busy.
