Sound Of Wonder

School can be a tough place when the world around you is silent. My world depended on my imagination as I could see, feel & taste, but not hear.

I was born deaf,  different from the others as my communication to the world was limited. I had my mom, dad & my ASL teacher. I had struggled enough in accepting my "defect" as I called it so making friends wasn't any easier. I would be bullied, pushed around, ignored, treated differently and all because I was deaf. And  because the only language I knew was sign. The one language people didn't understand or care for.

It sucked.

I would sometime cry and blame the world for the silence that was my life. All I ever wanted was to be normal, one of them. The one who could hear the sounds of the day, the one who wasn't like me, the one who knew sound not sound vibrations.
....
I sat alone in the library with Mrs, Ana silently communicating with our hands, facial movements and bodies. I was telling her how lonely I felt and how the world just didn't understand me.

She told me that I was special, and that the world would soon learn to love and appreciate me.

I nodded and smiled, i really wished for that to happen.

time went by and my birthday came along. It was a friday morning, and school awaited.

To me it was just another day. I had school, my world was silent and I was alone. But I was never prepared for what was behind the door to my classroom.

Everyone stopped the moment i walked in.

In a white poster were the printed signs to the phrase "Happy Birthday Andy". I almost thought of it as a dream!. I looked around and saw my classmates along side Mrs,Ana. She smiled my way and soon the magic began.
Slowly my classmates hands moved, sign by sign and move by move they spoke to me.

" We love and appreciate you. Happy birthday Andy".

I stood there shocked and overwhelmed with the surprise. They had spoken to me in my language.

I lifted my hands and spoke" Thank  you all for this. I needed this and it means alot"
..

Later that day Mrs, Ana and I found ourselves sitting down in class talking.

With the movement of her hands I learned that it wasn't that I was different that people ignored me. It was that they didn't know anything about what It like to be deaf or to be in my world. She had asked my classmates to help her surprise me. And the amazing thing is that they were willing to learn, help, and understand my world. Which made me even happier.

Not only was I no longer alone, I was also the start to a sign language club. To those who need or want to learn. Who would've though, Mrs,Ana' s act of kindness towards me made a change in all.
