PLAUGED
By Shannon Cuccia
Hey, I'm Leonardo Hinton. I'm your average guy, well, except for the fact that I have super human powers. Recently, staying hidden has been difficult. Mostly because the government is after me. Why, you might ask. I'm only going to say one word, powers. The government wants to do testing on me, most likely ending in my death. Oh, and I'm not alone. My best friend, who is extremely cute, is tagging along. Score! Her name is Hazel, she is the most beautiful girl I've ever seen. Her hair is a light brown and her eyes are a sparkling green. Oh, and she has these cute freckles sprinkled across her cheeks. I just love everything about her. Geez, sorry, I got a bit caught up. Let me just continue.
"Geez Leo, what even happened?" Hazel asks as she cleans off a couple of wounds on my leg.
"I uh fell?" I say obviously lying.
"Sure, fell. Just tell me what happened." She says getting frustrated.
"Fine I got into another fight. I just didn't want to worry you."
"Government?" She inquired.
"Government." I reply looking into her eyes.
"Please be more careful, Leo. You're all I have left..." She looks down and continues cleaning my wounds.
"I will, Hazel." I respond as she bandages my leg.
"Hmm"
"Hey, uh Hazel?" I look at her.
"Hm?" She looks up at me.
"Can I uh... Tell you something?"
"Sure?" She replies looking confused.
"O-okay so since about eighth grade... I've had a huge crush on you." I say looking away, blushing.
"Oh... Leo, I knew that already." She looks at me with a smile and a small giggle.
"W-what?!"
"Yeah, I borrowed your bio notes one time and there were a bunch of hearts with my name in them on the side of your paper. It was kind of obvious."
"Oh uh uhm"
"By the way, my feelings are the same..." She smiles.
I hesitate, lean forwards and kiss her. She looks at me, eyes wide.
"L-Leo..." She says staring at me. There is a slight hint of pink on her cheeks.
"Hazel, I'm sorry that was so ran-."
I get cut off by Hazel suddenly kissing me.
"Heh I got you back." She giggles and yawns.
"Tired?" I ask, looking at her again.
She nods and I tell her to go to sleep. She falls asleep and I pick her up, carry her for about a half hour and finally find a safe looking house. It seems newly abandoned. I open the door and walk inside. It is, surprisingly, in pretty good condition on the inside except for a faint smell of rotting wood. I set Hazel on the couch, then I lay on the floor next to the couch. Sooner or later, I fall asleep.
Morning comes, I wake up feeling groggy like normal. Everything a blur and my throat is a bit scratchy. I notice that, I only hear my breaths nobody else is here. I look up and, like I thought, Hazel is missing.
"Hazel?!" I scream out as I notice a small slip of pink paper. I pick it up and read it.
Leonardo,
This is President Lagely informing you of the disappearance of Hazel Stevens. If you EVER want to see her again. Turn yourself in by 5:00 PM.
Signed, President Ein Lagely.
"H-hazel..." I run out the door and sprint towards the government HQ, my eyes glowing a fluorescent blue. I want to find her, no, I NEED to find her. I finally arrive at the government HQ and kick down the door.
"Where is she?!" I yell making an entrance. The building is high tech looking with many computers. There are also a bunch of buttons on what I think is a control panel. Against the left wall, there is a tall tube with lime green, glowing liquid. I notice that at the bottom of the tube, there is a name plate. It reads, Leonardo Hinton. That's when I realize that The tube is meant for me. There are more tubes with different names, each one containing a different colored liquid. Suddenly, I see her. She is beaten up and handcuffed to a chair. Her wrist is all torn up from the handcuff digging into her skin. I cant stand to see her like this Its It's just sick I snap and dropkick the nearest guard. A few other guards run at me as blue flames burst from my body.
"One thing you'll learn from me, NEVER mess with my friends!"
I punch two guys near the door. After knocking those guys out, more guards come out, Lagely trailing behind them with a key ring around his wrist. I quickly glance at Hazel who is now passed out. I look back at the guards and jump over them. I get Lagely in a head lock, not without struggle though. Lagely thrashes around, still in my grip. Finally, he stops.
"Don't get any closer or Ill snap his neck!" The guards freeze where they stand.
"Please, please, PLEASE, don't kill him!" One of the guards begs as he drops to his knees as Lagely shakes in fear.
"Let Hazel and I go and NEVER bother us again." I say firmly.
"D-deal!" Lagely stammers out. "Now please let me go..."
I let go of him, take the key ring, and unlock the handcuffs bounding Hazel to the chair. She is still passed out so I pick her up and carry her far away from HQ. I set up camp somewhere deep in the woods and lay my sweatshirt down on the damp ground. I set Hazel on my sweatshirt and make a fire to keep her warm. While she is out cold, I bandage her wrist up with a piece of cloth ripped off my t-shirt. I then stare at the warm, amber flame while sitting on a log.
Hours later, she wakes up, tears streaming down her cheeks. I rush over and hug her tight.
"Shh shh.... everything is okay now. I'm here. You're safe," I kiss her head as she leans into me.
"Everything will be okay, Hazel." I say as she falls back asleep in my arms. I lay her back down and sit on the log.The following year had been great. Hazel and I decided to be in an official relationship as well as build a cabin in the woods. But, now is probably the best moment of my life. As we sit on the roof of our cabin, staring up at the night sky, I pull out a small box. I bend down on one knee and ask her the one question I thought Id never ask.
"Hazel Stevens, will you marry me?"
The End.
