Emily and Chelsea disliked nothing more than fairytales. Anything unrealistic was a turnoff. But what they hated even more, was a typical high school drama.
Chelsea wanted everyone to wake up from their labels. Wake up from their happily ever after fantasy. To stop living the roles they created for themselves and start realizing there's more to life then cute boys and popularity at its finest.
In an attempt to show the world, they started filming everything that reminded them too much of a cheesy movie. They took pictures of people kissing in the rain, insecure girls suddenly coming to school looking like Sarah Snyder. They took pictures of "jocks" and "geeks" and even after-high school marriage.
Life was too fast in this city. Everything happened too quick. Marriage was more likely to happen here than anywhere else in this world. Things you saw in movies existed in this very town.
This wasnt a real world. But no one seemed to see the pattern in people's lives. It was almost scary. It was like a ghost town. Everyone living, but not really living. It was fake.
Senior year rolled around, and the two girls realized this was their last chance to prove it all. Send a "shy girl" to ask a "cute jock" to prom, and let nature take it's course. Film his rejection (obviously with a couple insults to make his mark known) and post it. Everyone will know. Everyone will wake up.

"What's the point in this again? You know he has no regard for other humans, need I remind you." Said Emily Hooks sarcastically.
"Are you serious? That's the whole point of it all! To prove to the school and the rest of society that there, indeed, are people who find themselves to be more significant than another person." Said Chelsea Brooks.
The whole point of the two girls meeting and actually becoming friends in the first place, despite their differences, they had similar last names. And since that alone wowed the teachers and counselors like it was a new science discovery, Chelsea was forced to show Emily around the school for the rest of the week. Both Chelsea and Emily were slightly annoyed, but eventually grateful, and decided they'd might as well stick with each other for the rest of high school.
"No, I know! But I'm pretty darn sure everyone would just ignore it."
"But, we'll have actual footage and proof! Unlike those fake movies and fake biographies that are 'based off a true story', no, what we'll be doing, is making history! Changing lives and spreading awareness."
Emily scoffed and rolled her eyes. That's not what Emily was trying to say. She couldn't understand why she had to be the test monkey. Not that that alone bothered her. It's her task that bugged her.
Chelsea wasn't aware that this "experiment" could break Emily's heart. It could burn her soul so badly, Emily was sure she'd die. Because what Chelsea didn't know, was that she has had a crush on Anthony Black for as long as she's been friends with her.
She hated herself to a pulp when she realized her feelings. Her pathetic feelings only robots and naive princesses could feel. But it further proves how sucked up she is to this horrifying city. Her subconscious mind wanted to live a fairytale, but she didn't want anything to do with it at all.
In a useless attempt to let her feelings vanish, she tried to stay out of his way. But when Chelsea came up with this God awful plan, she couldn't help but see her life flash before her eyes. She really didn't want to ask him to prom because she knew he'd never say yes. Especially to her.
But of course, that's the point of the attempt right?
Besides, she set aside a specific set of hatred especially developed just for prom. She didn't hate many things, but prom always struck number one.
