Chapter 2: The First Day

When the bus finally arrived we shyly stepped on.

Just as I predicted, we were noticed. We saw a nice enough group of kids that greeted us. I noted their eager eyes and worried. We sat next to them. Immediately we were bombarded with questions.

"Where are you from? Do you like town?" They shouted.

I half expected this. Carmen was the one whom answered most the questions. She was the talker. I was shy. She responded like lightning. I couldn't make answers out. Her switching between Spanish and English didn't help. While she was speaking, I took my laptop out my bag and began to type. I figured if I tracked their behavior then I could find out our common interest.

Carmen must have been in my head because she smacked my hand with super-speed and told me to... "Put that thing away. You're over analyzing again." Without words I automatically put it back in my bag. Once at school the vice principle was already scanning the entrance for us.

"Hello, you must be Alex and Carmen. Welcome to Everington High. I'm your vice principal, Mrs. Saunders. Follow me to my office and I'll grab your schedules."

"Wow," Carmen whispered. "Pushy much?"

"Very," a student had now joined us. "Hi, I'm Cameron."

"I'm Carmen." She blushed. Carmen never blushes. Suddenly she was shy. He smiled. I hate to say but there was sparks.

"And I'm Alex," I said protectively; like a lion.

"Hi." He said still looking at Carmen.

"Yea," I continued. "She's my little cousin!"

"As if," Carmen assured him. "Only by 3minutes"

We made it to her office. She still hadn't noticed Cameron.

Here you go kids. The cafeteria is just down the hall. Our schedules were almost identical.

Saunders finally saw Cameron. "Oh, Cameron. Be a doll and show these two around. I understand you and Alex have similar classes?"

"Yes ma'am." He said reluctantly taking his eyes off Carmen. We walked Carmen to Spanish survey. After we dropped her off, we left for Art survey.

"We're going to be great friends." He spoke with such charisma. He's soft voice drew you in. "I understand we are neighbors, yes?" he asked.

"I don't think so. I live next door to this girl." I said. There was comfort in the thoughts of her.

"Yes," he said "She is my sister." He agreed

No, I thought. This couldn't be. My brain went into hyper-drive.

How could I over look such a minor, in-convenient, detail.

I was angry with myself for the miscalculation. That's great. The person, who liked my cousin, lived in the same house as the person I liked. Wait, I paused. This was completely irrelevant. Am I doing it again? I was over thinking. This would be an issue.

"Well," I heard Cameron. His voice rang like bells in my conscience. "This is Art Survey."

For some reason I found his perfect voice profoundly annoying.

"I guess we better go in." I answered a question I was going to ask to myself.

"Only if you want." He said answering my question

Why does he speak to me so kindly? Was I not dry enough earlier? Was there something he knew that I didn't?

"So we don't have to go in there?" I asked curiously.
