[Previously]
It was one of the last Scholastic meets of the season. April answered some questions, and was proud of herself. The rest of the team high fived eachother. Matt shook her hand, and whispered good job, as if it were a secret. So she whispered thank you back just as secretive. He gave a small, startled, laugh. Then, he walked away.● ● ● ● ●
the next day Matt sat at April's lunchtable, and she was shocked. He usually took advantage of off campus lunch. April's friends observed as they made little jokes. They saw her smile, and they saw him smile. April's friends knew they were absolute goners.
It was a week later when Matt asked April if she would be interested in going to the local diner. April said yes, and wondered if it was a date. She'd never been on a date before. Matt wanted it to be a date, but didn't know if April saw it as one. April walked into the diner, triggering the bell, ten minutes late. She saw Matt sitting in the corner booth, and unconsciously grinned. He grinned back, and when she was seated he teased her about her tardiness. The time passed seemingly at warp speed with the assistance of mutual cheesy jokes and a shared strawberry milkshake, and April was shocked to see that she was out far past her curfew when she checked her phone. She quickly told Matt that she had to go and jumped up. Matt jumped up right after her, and held open the door. He offered her a ride and she accepted, only half because she was in a rush. The sky that sped past the windows was pitch black, which is probably why April didn't notice when Matt made a deliberate wrong turn. It was also possible that she didn't notice due to the fact that at the same time he turned, he softly slid his hand over and placed it on her knee.
April also failed to notice the ride took far longer than it should have, until Matt put the car in park."Matt?"
"Yes, April?" Matt questioned, turning to face her.
"This, this isn't my house," She whispered
"Obviously, darling. This is the lake," he whispered back.
