"It's so much darker when a light goes out than it would have been if it had never shone." –John Steinbeck
Jason woke up in the hospital with feeding tube in his nose while casts and stitches were wrapped around his feeble body. He saw a doctor looking down at him with wide eyes and dried tears. Jason wasn't fully conscious so, everything was rather blurry. The one thing he could see clearly was the doctor's face.
"He's awake!" the doctor said.
"How is that possible? He was nearly dead when we found him six hours ago and with the injuries he had there was only a 15% chance of survival." a nurse responded.
"The explosion... the car falling off the mountain... Lana... Where is Lana?" Jason's feeble mind was swarming with thoughts. Jason stared at the doctor and wondered if the doctor knew where Lana was.
As if he was reading Jason's thoughts the doctor asked," How is the girl doing?"
The nurse looked down at Jason and gave him a sympathetic look. She opened her mouth to speak but, the words wouldn't come out. She cleared her throat and whispered," She... died an hour ago... in her sleep." She gave Jason a tearful look and said," You are in my prayers."
"It's part of god's plan, Helen. There is nothing we can do for her now.Let's just keep this boy alive." the doctor said as he stared at Jason. "There is nothing we can do for her."
Jason cried a tearless cry since he was too weak to produce tears but, the sadness was still unbearable. "How could I let this happen to her?" he thought. "How could god take her and not me?" Then, he remembered what the doctor said. "If this was all part of god's plan I should have died in that accident... God made a mistake and when I can move again, I'm going to fix that mistake... I'll stab myself with a butcher knife."
Jason looked around the room. He could see he was in a small hospital room with a single window that was covered by white shutters. The walls were painted a light blue and the floor was covered in cheap tile. The doctor dismissed the nurse and looked out the window.
He murmured," Her chances of survival were even slimmer than his. A 5% chance of survival. I can't lose two patients in one day. He has to survive."
The doctor walked to Jason's bed side and Jason caught a glimpse at his name tag which read Dr. Schmerz. Dr. Schmerz took a needle and stuck it into Jason's arm. Jason began to loose consciousness. "I love you, Lana." Jason thought and with that he passed out.
Jason dreamt that he was on a grassy field covered with poppies and Lana was sleeping on his lap. He stroked her hair when all of a sudden the scene changed. He was in hell. He could see a volcano range in the distance and lakes full of lava surrounding him. When he looked up he saw Lana flying in the air.
Lana said," Join me, Jason. You failed me, Jason. You said you loved me but, you abandoned me. You left me here all alone. How could you do this to me?
Jason cried and stared at Lana."I love you. I will join you. I will never leave you."
Lana cackled," It's too late for that, Jason. You should have died in that accident. We could be together but, you let god separate us. You are a mistake, Jason. Thousands of people are just like you, mistakes. We should have both died in that accident but, you survived! I cannot love a mistake."
Jason cried," I will kill mistakes like me and then I will kill myself. I will fix god's mistakes. I will do anything if we can be together again."
Lana laughed and faded into the darkness with the rest of the dream. Jason knew what he had to do. He was going to fix humanity.
