I stared at the many items before me, I was easily able to point out a scalpel, syringe, forceps, and a couple of other supplies that looked vaguely familiar from seeing Stephanie handing them to me while naming them off. I sat at a alloy table that Stephanie had prepared for me with every little thing I could need, except for bandages to cover wounds and wipe cloths that were for excessive bleeding, definitely if I wasn't able to see what was going on behind the blood. On a silver tray before me was a hung of flesh, the piece of flesh still had skin attached to it with fur and I could easily tell it was thigh flesh from a part of one of the five deer that was recently hunted down and made dinner for some of the pack.
"Remember, Avery, you have to be gentle and not rush anything." Stephanie reminded me, making me slowly nod as my hand twitched and the scalpel jerked.
"I'm scared." I huffed desperately, my eyes trained on the unskinned deer flesh before me.
"It's not going to jump up and snatch ya." Stephanie chuckled, making me roll my eyes.
"Just help me, I cut here... right?" I asked for clarification before deciding to not waste my time and made the cut.
"How you ask then do it, very rude." Wayne said, making me giving him a simple glare as he only put his hands up in a surrendering gesture and turning his attention away.
I turned back to Stephanie as she inspected how deep my cut was, if I had jagged edges, and if I had scraped at the silver tray underneath the hung of very edible meat, I wasn't to based on using the deer flesh, considering it wasn't much compared to human flesh but whatever, it can be turned into deer jerky. I impatiently waited, wanting to hear the results of my test as I felt like I was standing under a spotlight, I was nervous to know how I was progressing with these basics, considering it was something I was going to do often now that I was going to be the doctor of my new pack. I tightened my hold on the scalpel as I noticed Stephanie was taking longer to inspect the flesh than usual, damn, I must of really fucked up then.
I lowered my head in shame as Stephanie took a step back and scribbled something down, I wasn't sure what she was scribbling because her doctor chicken-scratch writing was an A+. I decided to not peak and wait until she finished noting down the things she witnessed about me. I wasn't sure if was going to get the position of doctor if I kept doing terrible things like this, from my view, my cut looked rather perfect but a little rought towards the end of the cut, meaning I just gave a quick but rough slice that could do some mild damage but nothing too crazy.
Stephanie finally lowered her board and looked at me with a warming expression, her light smile made hope swell in my chest. "You failed."
I released a heavy huff before and allowed my hands to fall to my side as I stared at the floor beside Stephanie's feet, I shook my head slowly because I couldn't believe I had failed my eight test on this already, I was terrible. I closed my eyes and willed the disappointment away as I waited for Stephanie to continue, she always tacked on good things to make me feel better and while I'd muster a smile and say, I'll do better next time, I still felt the disappointment and anger at myself.
"This was your best cut yet, the edges are even except at the end. It's only half a centimeter too deep but very fixable, harmless unless important organs like muscles lie underneath... then again, a muscle isn't really a organ. At the chest, that would be rather severe incase a lung or even the heart is close by. I give you a D-." She said, dropping the clipboard from her chest and walking toward her desk.
"I don't know why Alpha picked me to be the doctor, I'm not good at this stuff." I informed her, staring at the raw flesh and almost wishing I could blame it on the deer. "What made you give me a D- instead of an F?"
