I carelessly drove my garbage car around the parking lot and groaned. As the car in front of me near the turn, I took a second to check my phone. The next thing I heard was the backlight of the car in front of me break. I looked up and I had rammed the back of the car in front of me. "What the hell!" I shouted, "I wasn't even going that fast!" I stepped out of the car and looked at the damage. The light, scratches. Not that bad, I thought, panicking. The person who drove the car stepped out and I instantly started to panic. She was already at least a foot taller than me and had dead brown eyes. Caramel skin and short black hair, with a tattoo under her eye. She walked up to where I stood and every bone in my body told me to run. She looked down at me and then at the car. "You were driving right?" she asked, her voice being calm yet dead.
"Y-yes," I stuttered, "listen, if you're gonna kill me, j-just do it fast, a-and make sure nobody sees, I-I don't want you to get in trouble..."
I closed my eyes and braced for an onslaught of punches. A hand was placed on my shoulder and I screamed. Opening my eyes, I saw the woman bending down so we were face to face. "I am not going to hit you," she said, sounding proper with an unfamiliar accent.
"Are you sure?"
"Yes of course small tan girl".
"T-Tori, nice to m-meet you".
"Fareeha". She shook my hand and looked back at the car, sighing. I felt resent towards myself well in my stomach as she started to dial for a tow.
"W-where are you headed?" I asked, "because I-I can help you".
"I was getting a gift for my boyfriend, I was about to head to see him right now".
"Oh, I'm so sorry, want me to drive you?"
"Thank you, I'd appreciate it".
When the tow truck had finally pulled out, it had been an hour of awkward silence. The sun was already setting and I could barely look at Fareeha. When she got into my car, she held a red gift bag and placed it by her foot. I started the car and it sputtered to life.
~
She stepped out of the car and closed the door behind her. "Wait for me here," she said, looking at me with a slight smile. I nodded, terrified as she stepped out of the car and knocked on the door. As I watched, I sighed, leaning back in my chair. I watched the door open and Fareeha hold out the gift. It was torn out of her hand and she reared back, as if she were getting yelled at. The door was quickly slammed in her face and she looked down at the floor as she walked back to the car. When she got in, she took a deep breath and a few tears streamed down her cheek. "Are you okay?" I asked, reluctant to grab her hand.
"He broke up with me..." she mumbled quietly, before wiping her eyes, "never mind, a soldier shouldn't cry, just bring me home please".
"That's a dumb reason not to cry, a soldier is still a human".
"Well omnics tell a different story".
"Well I don't need to pull your pants down to tell if you're an omnic or not, just cry, I'll comfort you or something". Fareeha was taken aback. I sighed and started the car. Of course she won't listen. I pulled out of the driveway and asked her where we were going. "Well, I kinda sorta used to live with my boyfriend..." she mumbled once again.
"Seriously?" I groaned, before heading down the street, "You can stay at my place for a bit, just don't complain when we get there 'miss soldier', got it?"
"Yes of course, I won't say a word".
~
As I set up the old fold out couch, I groaned, rubbing my back. "Something wrong miss?" Fareeha asked, watching from behind me.
"I just hurt my back on this thing," I sighed, pulling it out fully, "I'll be fine, I just to -". Fareeha started to rub my back softly.
"What are you doing?" I asked, blushing at her soft touch.
"You deserve to take some time off," she said, as she continued to rub my back, "don't worry, I won't stay long". I sat down on the fold out bed and Fareeha sat behind me, still rubbing my back. I closed my eyes and sighed as the pain melted from my back. Her touch slowly moved to my shoulders then lightly down my waist. She wrapped her arms around my waist and rested her chin on my shoulder. Wrapping her legs around me, she sighed.
"I'm sorry," she said, resting her head against mine, "I have been so cold today, I don't know what's wrong with me".
"There's nothing wrong with you," I sighed.
"Can I tell a story?"
"Mhm".
"I - I'm not as brave as I say I am, even in the army I wasn't that brave, every night I feared for my life, so I got a security blanket, to sort of keep me calm, but when I moved in with my boyfriend, he threw it out, and forced me to hug him instead, and while it kinda worked, it wasn't the same".
"I'm sorry, he sounds awful".
"I've always wanted another, but I couldn't get one while I lived with him".
"Well you can have one here".
"What do you mean?"
"I-I want you to stay here, I like you, now that you've really opened up, a-and I want you to stay, I-I know we just met, but I really want you to stay".
"Oh, well, I've never heard that from a girl before... why not?" I turned around and threw myself at her, hugging her close.
"Thank you," I said, taking a breath, "I want you to be my security blanket".
"I will be".
