Chapter one| Hopeless
“ What happened to you yesterday Zaxina! You had us worried sick waiting for you. Why would you deliberately try to miss your brother welcome home party. Your lucky he can't go back! You would have missed him. It's not like we have seen you in the last five years, why can't you just come visit even just for a day. Is that to much to ask. I mean your my only daughter, that I haven't seen since she was in high school. Your father and I are very, very disappointed! What do you have to say got yourself young lady."
Sigh.
Holding the phone away from my ear I still heard what she just screamed throw the phone, every one in Africa probable heard her scold me. It was only a dinner, with the family. 'with the family' is the reason why I didn't go. I place the phone back to my ear and hear heavy breathing, if it wasn't for the fact that she just had that mental breakdown or caller ID I would have thought her a killer with all that heavy breathing.
I must have waited to long to speak because her shrill voice blasted through the phone.
“ Well?" She asked, I can already see her brows stitched together and her small hand on her hips even though it's been a while. I'm know her looks well, that one particular .It's the look she would give me as a child.
“ I had. . d. To . . . Umm walk my dog." I said banging my head on my open palm, I don't even have a dog.
“ Your lying."
“ No I'm not, how would you know, I live across town?" I ask
“You hate dogs every since second grade when Jim's dog bit you." She stated smugly.
“ That was second grade, people change." I say tracing the small scar on my leg as I sit up in bed. I pull the covers off and stretch.
“No you, you never changed. I bet right now your wearing white pajamas" She quipped.
I looked down at my indeed white t-shirt and white cotton shorts.
“ And if I am, Marsha. what's wrong with that." I signed as I walked in the large kitchen to sit ,hunkering down for a long talk ahead.
“ That means you wasn't walking your dog, you missed dinner with the family on purpose, and you lied." She says in her signature squeaky voice. This only happens when she's mad. Also another thing I memorized as a kid.
“ I do have a dog named . . . Gus and I had to take him to the vet. So I couldn't come to dinner, therefore I wasn't lying." I lied, thanking God for the five or six miles separating use. I'm pretty sure she would have throttled me.
There was a long pause.
I helped the phone in my hands.
“ Your still lying, I can fill it. And I thought you took . . . What was his name, the dog."
“Bruce?" I asked noticing the mistake to late. Why did the dates each by to curse me today, I didn't even have any coffee.
“ Aha, I knew you didn't have a dog!" She explained with joy. “ I thought my motherly instincts were slipping for a second."
“Marsha, I can explain." I sigh. She's positively annoying. I rub my forehead trying to close the whole she just ripped into it, into my day
“ Then explain missy."
“ My job cut my salary in two now I'm getting half as much and I can post my bills just not for food so I started walking dogs for extra cash. Gus and Bruce belongs to my next door neighbor and her husband Tom." I lied, the lie slide off my tongue like butter on a hot pan. It's not like I didn't lie ask the time when I was younger. I had to do a lot of that being a girl that constantly hit into trouble. But when I would take off my cap and give 'em their old for eyes they were spend through my fingers, I just hope it could algorithm through the phone.
