(Author's note at the end of chapter ;> )
--------------------------Finally in the safety of my haven, I kicked my shoes off, dropped my bag, and flunked onto my bed. Mimicking me, Josh dropped like a dead weight on my back, probably breaking my bones in the process. "Mmf! Get your lazy ass off! You are breaking my spine!" I started thrashing around, trying to fling him off until he fell to the floor.
"Ouch. You didn't have to go that hard," he said with a wince. I chuckled and rolled to grab my laptop off the nightstand.
As Josh complained about having a broken butt, I checked my messages and sorted through a handful that came from girls that I played around with. They weren't many, and they weren't mad or anything, most of them either wanted to hang out, go out, or just talk. I never treat girls like crap. When I play, they play along too, kind of a mutual not-so-serious fling between us. Some last, some don't. The longest serious relationship I had with a girl probably lasted for eight months, until I found out she was having some "fun time" with a guy from the varsity team while I gave her the 'space' she wanted.
Since then, I haven't gotten serious with anyone. I guess one night stands suit me better than going long term. That is why I'm here, sorting through messages that I might never reply to.
Josh crashed on my beanbag chair instead, turned to his phone, and got sucked into the world of mobile apps. We were quiet for a moment, both too tired, from school and fooling around, to start another conversation. We were alright with this, not much to talk about anyways.
Our sweet and rare calm was soon disturbed by a voice calling for us, which we quickly picked up as my mom having food for us downstairs. Without glancing back at Josh, I left my laptop on my bed and scurried down to the kitchen, plopping onto a barstool with Josh plopping onto the one next to me.
"Have I ever told you I love you, Auntie Cher?" Josh, ever the suck up, said when mom noticed our arrival.
My mom then placed a heavenly looking plate of cookies and brownies in front of us; one we so nearly had stuffed our faces with but were stopped by mom slapping our hands away. We looked at her blankly, "Aren't you two old enough to know what to do before facing meals?"
"Yes, mom," we synchronized and stood up simultaneously. "Don't use that voice with me, Sky, I AM your mom; Josh, I am not your mother," mom said, faking a stern voice.
Josh made an exaggerated gasp while washing his hands, "I'm adopted?!?"
"You were never in this family." He gave me a glare in response, and proceeded to splash me with his wet hands. I evaded his attack, and quickly washed my own hands before going back to our seats and digging in.
"Remember to leave some for Sage and your father. I made a batch for your family too, Josh; I know your sister loves cookies, so remember to take this home," mom said while leaving a plastic container on the dining table before going off to another room.
I took a bite of chocolate heaven and let out a satisfied moan. "God bless my mother," I muttered as I started devouring as much as my mouth would permit me. Half way through my pile, I noticed that it was too quiet and saw Josh staring at his phone, again, although this time without the adrenalin of playing. I put my cookie down gently as if saying, "I'll be back for you, I promise," and proceeded to turn my full attention to the lost looking guy in front of me.
"It's her again, isn't it?"
He snapped out of a trance and looked at me before placing his phone, screen down, on the counter. "She's with him again," he sighed. Looking at him in this state, you won't really see how down he really felt, he got better at hiding when its about her.
I gave him a pat on the back and a smack to his head. "Hey! What was that for?!" "For being too emotional in front of heavenly delights, dude." I pushed the plate of cookies and brownies towards him and he starts eating.
After swallowing a few brownies, he sighed, "I don't know, man, she's just- she's so- she's--" he groaned in frustration, "I don't know. She makes it look so easy to ignore me after everything. It makes me feel like I didn't matter to her as much as she did to me, you hear me? Man, she messed me up. I'm messed up."
"I hear ya, bro. Just eat and enjoy your damn brownies while they're hot like me." He smacks me from behind the head, "If these were anything like you, I wouldn't be eating them."
We continue eating after that small talk and ended up almost forgetting to leave some for my family.
Josh had to go home early because, apparently, his family is going out later. So, here I am, alone in the solace of my room, in the arms of the one I love...
My bed.
